SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The San Francisco State wrestling team closed out its regular season dual-meet schedule with a 43-3 road loss to Division I Cal Poly inside Mott Gym.
The Mustangs captured nine of 10 bouts, posting four pins and a technical fall to raise their record to 9-2 on the season, while the Gators finish at 5-9.
SF State emerged victorious in the opening match at 125 pounds as Pierre Bondoc notched a 5-2 decision over Britain Longmire. The Gator senior recorded a first-period takedown and added an escape in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Longmire tightened the score with a takedown of his own, before Bondoc registered a late escape and riding time to move to 19-16 on the year.
Alas, that would be the lone bright spot for SF State on the day as Cal Poly prevailed in the ensuing nine bouts to win going away.
Naveed Bagheri, the No. 2 wrestler in Division II at 141 pounds, squared off against Boris Novachkov, who entered the dual with a No. 2 ranking himself in three Division I polls. However, Bagheri (26-6) was kept off the scoreboard as his Mustang adversary tallied a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second and riding time to gut out a hard-fought 4-0 victory.
At 174, Gene Choi (16-17) trailed Steven Vasquez by a 5-3 margin deep into the third period, before his Cal Poly foe notched a takedown with 13 seconds remaining while adding riding time to seal an 8-3 decision.
The Gators will now have nearly two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, Feb. 26-27, in SF State's Main Gymnasium.
