ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The San Francisco State women's track and field squad continued its impressive indoor campaign this weekend, shattering three school records at the New Mexico Classic inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Highlighting the list of stellar performances was a fourth-place finish by the 4x400 relay team of Tyler Dalbey, Carrie Thomas, Stefeny Butler and Alicia Chambers, who established a new Gator standard with a time of 3 minutes, 49.60 seconds to eclipse the previous mark of 3:54.11 set at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 15 (by Dalbey, Thomas, Keenya McDaniel and Chambers). With its effort, the SF State quartet now ranks third in the event among Division II schools while improving upon its NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
“The results this past weekend are a reflection of all the hard work and dedication these athletes have put forth during our fall practices and, in some cases, the last two-and-a-half years,” said SF State head coach Terry Burke. “Carrie is beginning to fulfill the potential she showed in high school as well as meeting my lofty expectations for her this season.”
Similarly, Thomas rocketed to the top of the Gator indoor record book after logging a time of 25.16 in the 200 meters to go along with a personal-best 7.92 clocking in the 60, which ranks third in school history.
Not to be outdone, Dominique Knowles placed second in the triple jump, topping her own school-record mark with a leap of 38 feet, 11.75 inches, which currently ranks seventh among Division II competitors. In addition, the Laney College transfer also climbed into fourth place in SF State history after covering a distance of 17-00 in the long jump.
Meanwhile, Butler, who was a late addition to the travelling squad over the weekend, also established a new indoor personal best in the 400 with a 58.16 clocking, which moves her into third place on the Gators' all-time performance list.
Rounding out the SF State highlights was Cassie Freeman, who tied for 10th in the weight throw with a heave of 48-08, while Dalbey improved upon her career best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.64 seconds.
"Having the depth to complete two entire relays that can compete at the national level speaks volumes about the progress we've made here," Burke added. "This may have been the best weekend ever for our program."
The Gators return to action next weekend, Feb. 12-13, when they head north once again for a pair of meets in Seattle, Wash. Select SF State athletes are slated to compete at the UW Husky Classic on Saturday, while others will participate at the UW Husky Open on Sunday.
