SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The San Francisco State quartet of
Keenya McDaniel,
Alicia Chambers,
Brionne Baucham and
Carrie Thomas captured first place in the 4x100 relay on Saturday to lead the Gator track and field squad at the Hornet Invitational on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Kaylie Belk also nabbed a runner-up finish in the 800 meters as SF State posted 11 top-10 performances at a rainy and chilly Hornet Stadium.
Competing together for the first time this season, McDaniel, Chambers, Baucham and Thomas crossed the finish line with a winning time of 48.20, nearly a full second over second-place Nevada (49.15).
“Considering the conditions, I thought we all performed admirably today,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “While the relay time was not exceptional, for those ladies to get a win in their first meet as a team was significant.”
Belk, meanwhile, impressed in her second meet at SF State, logging a time of 2:23.41 in the 800, to finish second just behind Anna Eicholtz of Chico State, who posted a 2:20.01 clocking.
“Kaylie was recovering from a prolonged illness and ran a very controlled race,” Burke said.
In the 400,
Stefeny Butler turned in a third-place effort with an outdoor personal-best time of 59.01, edging
Samantha Eggert, who took fourth at 59.17.
In addition to her relay performance, McDaniel placed sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.64, while
Maya Cabiness won her heat and finished 10
th overall with a 16.77 clocking in her first-ever collegiate hurdles event.
The Purple and Gold return to action on Friday, March 25, when it plays host to the SF State Distance Carnival at Cox Stadium. Select Gators will also compete at the Stanford Invitational next weekend as well.
