STANFORD, Calif. – The San Francisco State 4x100 relay team of
Keenya McDaniel,
Alicia Chambers,
Brionne Baucham and
Carrie Thomas surpassed a 2011 NCAA Division II outdoor provisional qualifying time on Saturday to lead the Gator track and field squad during the final session of the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The SF State quartet won its heat and finished seventh overall after posting a time of 47.11 seconds, which ranks third in school history.
“Our goal was to get a provisional mark, and we accomplished just that,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “The key was Carrie's anchor run in which she ran down runners from Fresno State and Stanford. However, we need to work on making more optimal exchanges, so I know we can improve on this time dramatically.”
In addition, McDaniel and Chambers joined forces with
Kaylie Belk and
Maya Cabiness to post a 3:51.99 clocking in the 4x400 relay, moving them into third place on SF State's all-time outdoor charts.
The Gators also received several outstanding individual performances on the weekend, including Thomas, who came away with a first-place finish in section 5 of the 200 on Saturday with a career-fast 24.86, which ranks seventh in SF State history.
“While Carrie's race was slightly wind-aided, the cold and dampness probably hindered her performance more than the wind helped it,” Burke said. “She has had a fantastic start to her outdoor season.”
Belk, meanwhile, shaved nearly seven seconds off her 800 time from last week, completing the race at 2:16.67.
“Kaylie executed her race plan with precision and had a lot left at the finish,” Burke said. “She has incredible potential and should improve considerably as we approach the conference championships.”
On Friday, Chambers established a new personal best in the 400, clocking in at 57.37, while McDaniel climbed into fourth place on the school's all-time performance list with a time of 1:03.45 in the 400 hurdles, just missing a provisional qualifying mark by 0.45 seconds.
“Keenya continues to impress,” Burke said. “This was her first race over the 400-meter hurdles and to narrowly miss getting a provisional qualifying mark is evidence of her great natural ability and competitive savvy.”
Elsewhere, two-time outdoor All-American
Luisa Musika logged a fourth-place finish in the four-throw shot put event with a heave of 41-08.75,
SF State will be back in action next weekend, April 1-2, when it plays host to the annual Johnny Mathis Invitational at Cox Stadium.
