SAN FRANCISCO –
Luisa Musika captured the discus throw title with an NCAA Division II outdoor provisional qualifying mark of 154 feet, two inches on Saturday to highlight a busy day of action for the San Francisco State track and field squad at the Gators' own Johnny Mathis Invitational inside Cox Stadium.
“I couldn't be more pleased with our overall performance today," said SF State head coach Terry Burke, who was all smiles after his team's 21 top-five finishes.
“Our 4x100 relay took another step forward today,” Burke said. “Running even with Cal for the first two legs is evidence of the quality in this team. It's always exciting to break a school record and even more so when the old record was set 26 years ago back in 1985.”
In addition, the Gators boasted several impressive individual performances, including McDaniel, who surpassed a provisional qualifying time as well after finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:02.87, which ranks fourth in school history.
“Keenya achieved a provisional qualifying mark in only her second time in the event,” Burke said. “She is immensely talented and should continue to improve throughout the remainder of the season.”
Thomas, meanwhile, took second in the 400 with a career-fast time of 57.01, which now puts her at sixth on SF State's all-time outdoor charts, while Butler set a new lifetime-best of 58.70 to finish seventh.
Not to be outdone,
Kelsey Feeley moved into fifth place in school history with a career-fast 2:15.30 to place third in the 800, while Chambers also logged a pair of PRs on the day, including a third-place effort of 24.91 in the 200 to go along with a fifth-place showing of 12.17 in the finals of the 100, just ahead of Baucham who took sixth with a season-fast clocking of 12.46.
“Alicia, Carrie and Kelsey have all been key contributors to our team over the past three years and I was very happy for each of them today,” Burke said.
Back on the field, the Gators also received a third-place effort from Musika of 42-01.75 in the shot put to go along with her discus title.
“Luisa has returned to form in the discus and it's only a matter of time before she sees similar marks in the shot put and hammer. "Burke said. "This is the second best mark of her life in the discus and way ahead of where she was last year at this time."
Rounding out the list of Gator accomplishments was a personal-best mark by
Cassie Freeman in the hammer throw where she finished fifth with a heave of 151-0.
SF State looks to continue its momentum in two weeks when the squad splits for a pair of meets at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 15) in Walnut, Calif., and UC Davis' Woody Wilson Invitational (April 16).
