Gator Relays Break Two School Records at the RJ/JJK Invitational

Maya Cabiness ran the third leg of the Gators' record-setting 4x400 relay and notched the school's fifth-fastest time in the 400 hurdles at the RJ/JJK Invite on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES – The San Francisco State 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams each established new school records on Saturday during the final session of the highly competitive Rafer Johnson/Jackee Joyner-Kersee Invitational on the campus of UCLA.

The quartet of Keenya McDaniel, Carrie Thomas, Maya Cabiness and Alicia Chambers finished fourth in the 4x400 event after logging a time of 3 minutes, 46.32 seconds, shattering the previous SF State standard of 3:49.44 set back in 1985. With their effort, the Gator foursome provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and moved into fifth place nationally in the process.

Meanwhile, McDaniel, Chambers and Thomas joined forces with Brionne Baucham to post a fourth-place clocking of 46.59 in the 4x100 race, eclipsing their SF State record and provisional qualifying time of 46.60 recorded at the Gators' own Johnny Mathis Invitational on April 2.

“Overall, this was a very productive trip,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “We broke another long-standing record (in the 4x400), which isn't surprising based on our indoor performance earlier this year. All the same, it was good to get a provisional mark for nationals, and I know we can improve on that substantially.”

Individually, Cabiness took eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:03.86, which ranks fifth on the school's all-time outdoor charts.

“Maya is becoming a very good collegiate hurdler in only her third time running the event and has a good shot at provisionally qualifying in her next race,” Burke said.

Elsewhere, two-time outdoor All-American Luisa Musika turned in a fourth-place effort of 41 feet, 4.50 inches in the shot put and placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 150-01, just ahead of teammate Deirdra Bridgett, who took ninth with a result of 148-02.

The Gators will return to action next Saturday, April 16, when the squad splits for two meets at UC Davis' Woody Wilson Invitational and The Beach Invitational in Southern California.
