TURLOCK, Calif. –
Kaylie Belk captured the individual title in the 800-meter run on Saturday to lead the San Francisco State track and field squad during the finals of the 2011 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at Al Brenda Track on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus. With her performance, Belk was voted the CCAA Freshman of the Year by the league's head coaches and provided the Gators one of five additional All-CCAA awards for the day.
Belk crossed the finish line in her event with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 14.82 seconds, which ranks fifth in school history.
“Kaylie ran a tactically superb race to win against a very experienced field that included the defending conference champion (Kyle Wolff, Cal Poly Pomona),” said SF State head coach Terry Burke. “She is very much deserving of her Freshman of the Year award.”
In the high jump, Terwilliger climbed into second place on the Gators' all-time outdoor performance list with a career-high clearance of 5 feet, 6 ½ inches, while Musika, who garnered All-CCAA honors in the discus and hammer throw on Friday, turned in a personal-best effort of 45 feet, 3 ¾ inches in the shot put for her third NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of the season.
In addition, Chambers took home a medal after logging a time of 55.65 seconds in the 400, joining Cabiness, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II meet with a career-fast 1:02.79 clocking in the 400 hurdles, which now ranks fourth in school history.
“Maya showed incredibly toughness with her finish today,” Burke said. “To achieve a provisional qualifying mark in her first season of hurdling is truly impressive.”
As a team, SF State placed fourth with 99 points, its highest point total at the conference meet since joining the CCAA in 1998-99. Chico State tallied 210 points to win the title, comfortably ahead of runner-up UC San Diego (176 pts.), while Cal State L.A. (116 pts.) took third.
“I was very pleased with our accomplishments this weekend,” Burke said. “A number of people really stepped up and performed above expectations.”
The Gator cause was also aided by two third-place efforts in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the 4x100 event,
Keenya McDaniel joined forces with
Brionne Baucham,
Carrie Thomas and Chambers to log a time of 46.99 seconds, while the quartet of Thomas, Cabiness, Chambers and
Stefeny Butler recorded a 3:55.22 clocking in the 4x400.
“Alicia's contributions today were substantial,” Burke said. “Her reliability and commitment to the team cannot be overstated.”
Elsewhere,
Meagen Moiola finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-03.25, Thomas placed fifth in the 100 with a season-fast wind-aided time of 12.05, while
Tanya Ferreira finished eighth in the 5,000 after clocking in at 18:50.17.
Select SF State competitors will have one last chance to improve or post NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times and marks next week when they return to Turlock for the Cal State Stanislaus Twilight meet on Friday, May 13.
