Nicole Vanni connected on a golden goal off a rebound on her own missed shot with five minutes left in the second overtime period to give the Gators the 1-0 victory over the visiting Western Oregon Wolves in their 2011 season home opener.
"We had good perseverance on getting the win this afternoon," said SF State Head Coach
Jack Hyde. "Our team is not quite in match fit, but showed good promise."
The game was evenly match as the Gators out shot Western Oregon (0-2) 12-10 including 4-1 in the two overtime periods. SF State also recorded more corner kicks than its visitors, 5-3.
Annicia Jones had four saves en route to the shutout while Brittney Rigtrup had five in goal for the Wolves.
Chloe Harrington gave the Gators their first shot to take the lead in the 15th minute, but Rigtrup recorded one of her five saves.
Western Oregon had a chance to take the lead, but Jones stopped Kymberly Witmer's attempt in the 27th minute.
Kiley Williams' attempt in the 29th minute was stopped by the Wolves' Rigtrup to send the game scoreless into the half.
The second half was evenly played with four shot attempts by the Wolves and three by SF State. With less than 10 seconds left in regulation, Lindsay Bauman's free kick hit the post to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime period saw just three shot attempts with two coming by the Gators'
Mari Mendizabal and
Nicole Vanni which set up the heroics for the overtime.
In the second overtime, the only shot attempts came in the 105th minute both by Vanni which one was the golden goal.
SF State will return home this Monday, September 5th at 2pm, when the Gators host Central Washington.
