Gators Dispatch Pesky Toros in Three Sets

Robyn Hall led all players with 12 kills on Friday and added two block assists as SF State came away with a three-set win over CSUDH.
CARSON, Calif. – Bolstered by double-digit kill totals from three players, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team won its fourth in a row on Friday, defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills (25-20, 25-21, 28-26) in a hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association match at the Torodome.

Robyn Hall led all players with 12 kills to help the Gators improve to 8-5 on the season and 4-4 in conference play, while the Toros fall to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the CCAA.

Megan Johnson (11 kills) and Halimah Oswald (10 kills) also sparked the SF State offense, while Iris Tolenada and Sarah Kurfess contributed 39 assists and 13 digs, respectively.

As a team, the Gators outhit CSUDH by a .309-.173 margin, maintaining a 47-36 advantage in kills to go along with a 5.0-2.0 edge in total blocks, including two block assists apiece by Oswald, Hall, Tolenada and Jazmine Williams.

Despite the sweep, the match was close throughout as the two teams combined for 28 ties and 11 lead changes.

SF State came out crisp in the opening set, hitting at a .529 clip on 11 kills in 15 attempts with just two errors.  The Purple and Gold also took advantage of nine errant Toro attacks, including five during a decisive 9-1 run that gave the visitors a 15-7 cushion.  Moments later, the Gators extended their lead to nine at 20-11 following back-to-back kills by Williams and Kelly Ostello. CSUDH whittled away at the deficit, pulling to within 23-19, but put-aways by Hall and Williams snuffed out the rally.

SF State opened up a 14-11 lead in the second stanza until two Abbey Prusa kills and another by Azieanna Smith capped a 5-0 spurt, putting the Toros up 16-14.  The scoreboard soon witnessed two ties; however, the Gators eventually vaulted in front for good at 20-18 on a kill by Hall and a Reyna Rochin service ace.  Moments later, Oswald duplicated the feat from the service line, giving SF State its biggest lead of the frame at 23-19, while kills by Hall and Johnson provided the clinching points.

The Gators found themselves on the wrong side of 15-11 score in set number three until a Tolenada service ace punctuated a key 9-3 run to put the visitors in front 20-18. CSUDH quickly responded with a 6-2 spurt of its own as three kills by Elizabeth Krieger helped stake the host school to a 24-22 lead. The Toros were unable to close out the frame, however, as four attempts at set point came up empty. Nursing a slim 26-25 advantage, CSUDH imploded as a bad set and an errant attack suddenly put SF State back in the lead at 27-26.  Buoyed by its good fortune, the Purple and Gold would not waste the opportunity as Hall and Williams combined for a block to seal the victory.

Krieger finished with 10 kills and a match-high 15 digs to complete the double-double for the Toros, while Smith added eight put-aways and eight scoops in the defeat.

The Gators continue their Southern California swing on Saturday, when they tackle Cal State L.A. beginning at 7 p.m.
