Gators Sweep Central Washington in 2011 Home Opener

Robyn Hall was one three Gators to post double-digit kill totals, blasting 11 non-returnables in a victory over CWU on Tuesday.
SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State women's volleyball team kept its early season momentum going on Tuesday, knocking off Central Washington (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) in its 2011 home opener inside the Main Gymnasium. The Gators (4-1) received double-digit kills from three players, including Lauren Walsh, who led all players with 12 put-aways en route their fourth straight victory and third sweep in a row. Meanwhile, the Wildcats slip to 4-2 on the young season.

Robyn Hall (11 kills) and Megan Johnson (10 kills) also figured in SF State's potent offensive display as the Purple and Gold outhit CWU .310-.150, maintaining a 53-29 advantage in kills and a 52-36 margin in digs. Additionally, Iris Tolenada dished out a season-high 44 assists, while Sarah Kurfess added a match-high 16 digs.

Conversely, Jordan Offutt and Cheltzie Williams paced the Wildcats with 12 kills apiece, while Erin Smith and Chelsea Vea finished with five block assists and 12 digs, respectively, in the defeat.

The two teams battled through five ties and two lead changes in the opening set until the Gators went out in front to stay at 12-10 on a kill by Halimah Oswald and a Wildcat attack error. Shortly thereafter, an errant SF State serve kept the margin close at 17-15 when Johnson uncorked a pair of kills to spark an 8-3 run, while Walsh added two put-aways of her own to provide the clinching points.

Set number two witnessed the Gators building an 11-6 advantage until CWU's Williams registered a pair of kills and combined with Offutt on a block to pull the visitors to within 11-10. SF State managed to keep the Wildcats at bay, however, as Walsh and Hall recorded kills on the next two serves to stem the rally. Moments later, the Gators stretched their lead to six at 23-17 as Walsh and Hall came up big once again with back-to-back put-aways.  CWU gradually cut the deficit in half, taking advantage of three SF State attack errors and an errant serve to narrow the gap to 24-21 until a kill by Hall ended the suspense.

Kelsie Brennan got into the act in the third and final frame for the Purple and Gold, knocking down three of her six kills on the night to help the host school open up a seemingly comfortable 18-10 lead. However, CWU threatened late as a kill by Williams capped a 9-3 spurt to tighten the score at 21-19. Charlotte Campion then came off the bench to record a critical kill, while Johnson and Brennan teamed on a block to give SF State some much-needed breathing room at 23-19. The Wildcats threw in one last scare as a Williams kill and a block by Offutt and Smith sandwiched around a Gator service error cut the deficit to two once again at 24-22. With the set perhaps hanging in the balance, a pair of SF State reserves delivered in the clutch as Kelly Ostello tallied the final kill of the night off a feed from Katie Mullen to cement the victory.
