HSU Surge Past Gators in Second Half in 87-70 Win

Nefi Perdomo Paced the Gators with 16 Points in Their CCAA Game in Arcata This Evening

ARCATA, Calif.---  The Humboldt State Lumberjacks outscored the visiting SF State Gators 47-26 and held them to just 40% shooting in the second half to key their 87-70 conference victory at Lumberjack Arena.  Randy Hunter led the way for the hosts with a game high 22 points.
 
“We played a good first half, but we need to play 40 minutes not just 20,” said SF State Head Coach Paul Trevor.  “We did not defend in the second half and when we do not we have the inability to score.”  “As a team, we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and get this figured out as it is not going to get any easier.”
 
Nefi Perdomo had 16 points to lead SF State (4-11, 2-7 CCAA) while Robbie Herndon added 11 points off the bench.  James Albright also scored in double figures as he chipped in 10 points for the visitors. 
 
The Lumberjacks out-rebounded SF State 35-31 and also forced 20 turnovers by the Gators.  They also held the advantage at the charity stripe going 25-for-38 while SF State went 12-for-16. 
 
Besides Hunter' 22 points, Kyle Baxter added 19 points while Brandon Sperling had 13 points and Ethan Dillard chipped in 11.
 
The first half went back and forth and saw four ties in the first nine minutes including 21-21 when the Lumberjacks' Brandon Sperling connected on a lay-up with 11 minutes left in the first stanza.
 
Griffin Reilly's three capped a 5-0 run by the Gators as they took a 27-22 lead in the next two minutes.  James Albright's lay-up gave the visitors a 35-29 lead with 3:47 left on the clock in the half.
 
Humboldt State outscored SF State 12-6 in the final minutes of the half and cut the deficit to 42-41 heading into the locker room.
 
The Lumbjeracks took a 47-44 lead on Kyle Baxter's lay-up in the first two minutes of the game.
 
SF State came right back as the Gators went on a mini 6-2 run as Max Fodor's lay-up gave the visitors a 50-49 lead at the 17:02 mark.  That was the last time that the Gators held the lead as the hosts outscored their visitors 15-4 to take a 64-54 lead on a three by Ethan Dillard with 11:46 left in the game.
 
Humboldt State increased its lead to 87-70 (which was the final) with 1:55 to go as the Lumberjacks improved to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA.

SF State will continue its season long five-game road trip this Tuesday, January 17 in Pomona for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona.  The Gators lost 73-59 to the Broncos on Nov. 23 at the Swamp.
