Jimenez, Thomas Shine for Gators in 2012 Indoor Track Debuts

Zuleima Jimenez finished first in the 3,000 at the Run for the Dream Invite on Friday.
FRESNO, Calif. and ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – San Francisco State's Zuleima Jimenez captured the event title in the 3,000-meter run on Friday to lead a group of Gator distance runners at the Run for the Dream Invitational inside the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the SF State indoor track and field contingent traveled to the University of New Mexico's Cherry and Silver Invitational, where Carrie Thomas surpassed a provisional NCAA Division II indoor qualifying time in the 200 meters to highlight opening day action for the Purple and Gold at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Jimenez crossed the finish line with a winning time of 10 minutes, 41.60 seconds, which ranks fifth on the Gators' all-time indoor charts.  SF State also received a pair of top-10 finishes in the event from Lindsay Enright (9th – 11:05.79) and Alicia Trujillo (10th – 11:06.69).

A total of 11 Gators also took part in the 1-mile run; however, overall results were not finalized by press time after runners in the second heat were timed for an additional lap.  SF State took the first four places of the opening heat, including winner Sue Choi, who logged a time of 5:40.37, edging Enright (5:40.47), Trujillo (5:41.93) and Karen Marchan (5:46.11).

“This was a great experience for our track team's distance group,” said assistant coach Tom Lyons.  “It was a perfect way to kick off the semester and get back into competition after last fall's hugely successful cross country season.”

Back in New Mexico, Thomas broke her own indoor school record in the 200, with a 25.11 clocking as all five Gator sprinters established new personal records in the race, including Keenya McDaniel (25.28), Brionne Baucham (25.66), Maya Cabiness (26:04) and Kayleigh Hendrix (26:90).

In the field events, two-time outdoor All-American Luisa Musika finished seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 52 feet, 4.75 inches, while Deirdra Bridgett placed 12th at 46-05.50.

SF State will wrap up competition at the Cherry and Silver Invitational on Saturday, beginning at 10:20 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles.
