Musika, McDaniel, 4x400 Relay Set Provisional Qualifying Marks in Cherry and Silver Finale

Luisa Musika broke her own indoor school record in the shot put on Saturday at the Cherry and Sliver Invite.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – San Francisco State's Luisa Musika (shot put), Keenya McDaniel (60 meters) and its 4x400 relay team all reached NCAA Division II indoor provisional qualifying marks on Saturday to highlight the final round of competition for the Gator women's track and field squad at the University of New Mexico's Cherry and Silver Invitational inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Musika finished second in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, 9 inches to break her own school record established just last year at the University of Washington's Husky Open, while McDaniel placed 10th in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.70 seconds to equal Maria Nelson's indoor school standard set in 2007.  The Gator sophomore also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay that finished fifth with a 3:49.50 clocking, joining Carrie Thomas, Maya Cabiness and Brionne Baucham. With its effort, Saturday's relay moved into third place on SF State's all-time indoor charts.

In addition, Thomas logged a provisional qualifying time on Friday in the 200 after crossing the finish line at 25.11 to eclipse her own indoor school record as well.

“Overall, I was extremely pleased with our performances this weekend,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke.  “Having three individuals and a relay team achieve provisional qualifying marks in the very first meet of the season is indicative of the progress we've made over the past few years.

“Brionne did a fantastic job substituting for Alicia Chambers in the relay. Without her, we wouldn't have reached a qualifying time. She is a very talented athlete and will be a key part of our program in the future.”

The list of Gator individual highlights also included Meagan Moiola and Tiana Wills, who wound up in a nine-way logjam for 10th place in the high jump with a clearance of 5-04.25, while Kaylie Belk just missed out on a top-10 finish after placing 11th in the 800 with a time of 2:20.34, which ranks third on the school's all-time indoor performance list.  Elsewhere, Cabiness recorded SF State's fifth-fastest time ever in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles after clocking in at 9.53.

The Gators will return to action in two weeks when they revisit the Albuquerque Convention Center, Feb. 3-4, for the New Mexico Classic.
