TURLOCK—SF State lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in overtime at No. 6 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors (12-1, 8-1 CCAA) in a conference match at Warrior Stadium this evening in Turlock, Calif. Karanee Demery scored the golden goal in the 92
nd minute off a cross from Bernie Bettencourt.
“This evening, our players played best their match of the season,” said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. “Unfortunately, we came up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.”
SF State (4-7-1, 2-7-1 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead early in the first half as Millie Brown stopped
Chloe Harrington's attempt in the sixth minute. Two minutes later, Harrington had another attempt go wide right to give the Gators the early lead.
The sixth ranked Warriors first attempt came in the 24
th minute as Allison Case connected on a cross from Emily Relles in the 24
th minute to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
The Gators came back though and tied the match in the 26
th minute as
Nicole Vanni connected on a cross from
Elizet Ceja. The guests took the lead in the 31
st minute as Ceja connected on a ball from Harrington for her third goal of the season.
SF State did not hold on to the lead long as Sabrina Williamson connected on a header off a ball from Relles and Karli Nestler in the 41
st minute to tie the match at 2-2.
Nicole Vanni had a chance to give the Gators the lead, but her attempt went wide left as the match went into half-time tied at 2-2.
The second half was evenly played as the Warriors had the only shot on goal attempts of the second 45 minutes. The first one came in the 68
th minute by Nicole Bare and the second one in the 83
rd minute off the foot of Bernie Bettencourt. The match went into overtime tied at 2-2.
SF State had the first attempt for the golden goal go wide left off the foot of Ceja in the 91
st minute. Then after that Gator attempt, Bernie Bettencourt passed the ball to Karenee Demery for the game-winner in the 92
nd minute. That was Demery's 14
th goal of the season.
The Gators will end their season long five-match road trip this Sunday, October 14
th at 11:30am in Chico, Calif., for a CCAA match with Chico State. The Wildcats lost 2-0 to Cal Poly Pomona earlier this evening in Chico.
