OAKLAND--- The SF State Gators' women's basketball team used a strong defensive presence to key their 95-63 regular season opener victory over the Holy Names University Hawks this evening at Tobin Gym in Oakland.  The Gators forced 33 turnovers by their hosts while recording 23 steals and holding the Hawks to just 38% shooting from the field.

“Great road win against a Pac West opponent,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “Overall I was happy with our first half performance, however we have to be able to manage the ball better in the second half.”

SF State (1-0) recorded double digit performances from Nicole Hicks, Farrah Shokoor, Angela Van Sickel and Desiree Collins.  Hicks had a game high 24 points in just 29 minutes. She was 12 of 22 from the field and recorded six of the Gators' 23 steals.  Shookor recorded her first double-double of the season and her sixth of her career by scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.  The sophomore post player also had seven steals and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Van Sickel finished the night with 17 points while Collins added 10 points off the bench for SF State.

The game was close for the first eight minutes of the game as the Gators held just a 18-14 lead.  After that SF State went outscored Holy Names (0-2) 8-2 to take a 26-16 lead on a Hicks' jumper.

Soulijah Evans' jumper camped a 8-0 run by the Hawks to cut the Gator lead to 26-24 with 6:39 left in the haft, but that's the closest the hosts could get as SF State finished the half outscoring Holy Names 26-3 to take a 52-27 lead into the locker room at the half.

SF State continued its defensive effort in the second half as the Gators increased their lead to 91-53 with a little under four minutes left in the game as they cruised to a 95-63 victory.

Britney Potestio paced the Hawks with 18 points and Clara Butler-Green chipped in 16 points off the bench.
