SF State Gators Run Past Penguins, 60-38

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— The visiting SF State Gators outscored the Dominican University of California Penguins 24-7 in the first 11 minutes of the second half to propel them to a 60-38 non-conference road win at the Conlan Center in San Rafael, Calif., this evening.  Farrah Shokoor led the Gators with 11 points while Angela Van Sickel chipped in 10 points and Desiree Collins had 9 points and a season high 12 rebounds.
 
“We played a sloppy game this evening against a very scrappy Penguin team,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “However, we are learning how to win as we have to take one game at a time.”
 
SF State (4-3) held the Penguins to just 26.9% shooting from the field while forced 29 turnovers and recorded 16 steals in the Gators' non-conference win.
 
Yvonne Sanchez paced the Penguins (2-5) with a game high 12 points.
 
The Gators scored the first 11 points of the game in the first ten minutes of the game.  Sanchez hit a three to end the scoring drought by the Penguins. 
 
Dominican cut the Gator lead to 19-12 at the 6:18 mark, but the visitors increased their lead back to double digits on a Shokoor lay-up with 3:15 to go to give SF State a 24-12 lead.
 
The Penguins ended the half on a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to 24-17 heading into the locker room.
 
SF State started the second half where the Gators started the first half outscoring their hosts 24-6 to take a 48-23 lead, their largest of the game.  The Gators cruised to a 60-38 non-conference win.
 
SF State will return to the court when the Gators travel to Belmont, Calif., for a non-conference game with Notre Dame de Namur this Friday, Dec. 14 at 7pm PST.
