Gators Hold Off Seawolves in 72-70 Road CCAA Win

Calvin Otiono Had a Season High 22 Points To Lead the Gators to a 72-70 Win at Sonoma State
Box Score  ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---  The visiting SF State Gators held off a late rally by the Sonoma State Seawolves to defeat their hosts 72-70 in a CCAA game at The Wolves Den in Rohnert Park this evening.  Calvin Otiono led the way for the Gators (4-3, 2-1 CCAA) with a season high 22 points while grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out three assists.  Four other Gators scored in double figures in William Overton, Jr., (13 points), Andre Jones (13 points), Brandon Tatum (11 points) and Decensae White (11 points).
 
“We are getting better,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  “This evening we kept Sonoma State off balance with our defense.”  “We won a close game on the road, which you have to do in this league.”
 
Sonoma State (3-2, 2-1 CCAA) took an early 14-8 lead on a three by Jason Walter, but the Gators took the lead for good as they outscored their hosts 15-3 in the next five minutes to take a 23-17 lead.  SF State would not relinquish this lead the rest of the way.
 
Otiono's jumper with 49 seconds left in the half gave SF State its largest lead of the half, 38-28.  Emmanuel Bradford went 1-for-2 from the line in the final seconds to cut the Sonoma State deficit to 38-29 going into the locker room.
 
The Gators came out firing in the second half as they opened up the new stanza outscoring the Seawolves 16-7 in the first six minutes to increase their lead to 54-36. 
 
Sonoma State's Justin Herold lay-up with 12:07 capped an 8-2 run by the Seawolves and cut the Gator lead to 56-44. 
 
Back to back three's by the Gators' William Overton, Jr. gave the Gators back their 18-point lead (62-44) with 11:36 on the clock. 
 
The Seawolves would not go away as they chipped away at their deficit and cut it to 71-70 on a dunk by Herold with just 78 seconds to go in the game. 
 
Sonoma State had two chances to take the lead, but they missed both attempts including one in the final seconds which Overton Jr., grabbed the defensive rebound and then was fouled.  He made good on one of his two free throw attempts as the Gators held on for the 72-70 win.
 
Herold finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Seawolves while Will Olsem had 13 points and Patrick Scott chipped in 12 points. 
Andre Jones

SF State shot 51.9% from the field for the night including 52.6% from three-point land and also had a season high 15 assists.  Each team had 32 rebounds while Sonoma State went 8-for-18 from the line this evening. 
 
The two teams will now move their season series to San Francisco, Calif., for a 4pm scheduled tip-off this Saturday, December 8th at The Swamp on SF State's campus.
