SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators were able to take down the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves 63-49 in a CCAA game Saturday night at the Swamp.
Decensae White led the way for the Gators (5-3, 3-1 CCAA), recording his second double-double of the season, scoring 17 points while also grabbing a season-high 12 rebounds. Despite the impressive offensive performance, it would be the Gators defense that would prove to be the determining factor for SF State, who has won 5 of their last 6 games.
“We are making an emphasis on getting stops and finishing plays,” said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. “Every game has been very competitive so far this season and tonight we played for forty complete minutes.”
Sonoma State (3-3, 2-2 CCAA) was able to jump on the Gators early with perimeter shooting. Two-time CCAA player of the week Patrick Scott of Sonoma State had two quick threes to open the game. However, the Gators defense would then jump on the Seawolves and hold them to just 12 points through the first ten minutes of the first period. SF State's full court pressure forced Sonoma into early turnovers and unwanted shots as the Seawolves were unable to get into a rhythm offensively. The Gators were able to control the pace of the game through the first half as they finished with a 43-20 lead at the half.
Coming out of the second period, the Seawolves were able to go on an early 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 44-29 with 15:13 left. However, the Gators defense was able to regain its strength and take over the game. SF State's
Calvin Otiono and
Brandon Tatum each had 3 steals in a collective defensive effort. The Gators were able to respond to every Sonoma State run as they went to cruise to a 63-49 victory.
SF State will be off until January 4
th before they return to the court when they travel to Turlock to take on Cal State Stanislaus.
