SACRAMENTO, Calif. – San Francisco State's
Luisa Musika attained two NCAA Division II outdoor provisional marks in the hammer throw and shot put on Saturday to lead the Gator track and field squad on Saturday at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational.
SF State also received a first-place finish from
Tiana Wills in the high jump, while
Keenya McDaniel took fourth in the 400 meters as the Purple and Gold registered nine top-10 finishes at the non-scoring meet inside a windy and chilly Hornet Stadium.
“Conditions were a major challenge for all of the competitors today and I was proud of the fortitude that our athletes demonstrated,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke.
Musika established a new outdoor personal best in the hammer throw with an eighth-place distance of 163 feet, 7 inches, which ranks third on the school's all-time charts to go along with a fifth-place effort of 44-00.75 in the shot put. With her two performances, the SF State senior provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in May. She also finished fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 140-03.
“Luisa had a very solid meet in what was really her first outdoor meet of the year,” Burke said. “Getting two provisional marks this early bodes well for the rest of her senior season.”
In the high jump, Wills tied for the top spot with Nevada's Nicole Williams as both cleared 5 feet, 5 ¾ inches. However, the Gator junior claimed first place after completing the height in just one attempt, while Williams needed two jumps. With her effort, Wills moved into a tie for fourth place on SF State's all-time outdoor performance list.
“Tiana did well fighting the horrible conditions to win the high jump,” Burke said. “I expect her to achieve a provisional mark in short order.”
Elsewhere, McDaniel, who garnered All-America accolades in the triple jump at the DII Indoor Championships on March 10, narrowly missed an outdoor provisional qualifying time in the 200 meters after placing fourth with a wind-aided result of 24.57 seconds.
Rounding out the list of SF State top-10 finishes on the day were
Meagen Moiola (6th – 5-03.75) in the high jump,
Cassie Belk (8th – 108-05) and
Lexi Rivas (9th – 106-01) in the javelin throw and
Ruth Le Beau (8th – long jump).
The Gators will return to action next weekend when they play host to the annual Johnny Mathis Invitational, March 23-24, inside Cox Stadium on the SF State campus.
