AZUSA, Calif. – San Francisco State's
Luisa Musika established a new school record in the shot put to highlight a busy Friday of action for the Gator track and field squad at the Bryan Clay Invitational on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
Musika recorded a toss of 46 feet, 2 ½ inches to finish in fourth place, surpassing her own Gator standard of 45-09.25 set in 2011 at the Cal State Stanislaus Twilight Qualifier. With her performance, the SF State senior now ranks 13th in the event nationally. In addition, Musika posted a sixth-place effort of 149-02 in the discus throw.
The Gators also received an NCAA Division II outdoor provisional qualifying mark in the high jump from
Tiana Wills, who cleared 5 feet, 7 inches, which ranks second on the school's all-time outdoor charts.
“Tiana performed very well and adapted to the extremely hot conditions,” said SF State head coach Terry Burke. “She is fully capable to jumping much higher in our upcoming meets.”
On the track,
Brionne Baucham logged a personal-best time of 12.16 seconds in the 100 meters to climb into seventh place on the school's all-time outdoor performance list. The Gator sophomore also turned in a season-best clocking in the 200, crossing the finish line with a wind-aided time of 24.82 seconds, just ahead of teammate
Carrie Thomas (24.87), who turned in a season-fast effort as well.
“Our sprinters really stepped up today in the 200, which bodes well for our 4x100 relay as the season progresses,” Burke said.
In the 400-meter hurdles,
Maya Cabiness just missed out on a provisional qualifying time after tying her personal-fast time of 1:02.79 to finish in eighth place. She also shaved 1.14 seconds off her season-best in the 100 hurdles after clocking in at 15.37.
“I was very pleased with Maya's performance today,” Burke said. “She appears to have overcome her hamstring injury from earlier this season.
Rounding out the list of Gator accomplishments was
Ruth Le Beau, who finished 10
th in the triple jump with a leap of 36-06.25, which now ranks eighth in school history. She also surpassed her season best in the long jump by 6.25 inches after posting a mark of 17-08.25 to finish 13th in the event.
SF State returns to action next weekend when it competes in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, April 27-28, in Berkeley, Calif.
