ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---- Cara Curtin scored both of the sixth ranked Sonoma State Seawolves (5-0, 3-0 CCAA) goals to key their 2-0 shutout win over the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park, Calif.
“We played better in the second half,” said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. “We just cannot score a goal.”
The Seawolves scored early as Cara Curtin scored off a breakaway after a pass from Bree Robles to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 7
th minute. They doubled their lead in the 15
th minute as Curtin scored on another breakaway in the 15
th minute.
The Gators'
Annicia Jones made on her four saves of the day in the 16
th minute as she stopped Elena Catania's attempt to increase the hosts' lead.
SF State's (1-3, 0-3 CCAA) first shot attempt was off the foot of Anica Marham but it went wide left in the 20
th minute. Jones made another save in the 30
th minute as she stopped Curtin's attempt to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
The visitors had a chance to cut into the Seawolves' lead in the 44
th minute, but
Justine Hernandez's attempt sailed high as the match went into the half with Sonoma State leading 2-0.
SF State came out aggressive in the second half as
Michelle Kay had her shot attempt stopped by the Seawolves' Alexis Sciacqua in the 56
th minute. Then one minute later, Kay had her attempt blocked.
Jones recorded another save in the 65
th minute as she stopped another shot attempt by Catania.
The Gators had two more attempts in the final 6 minutes, but both went wide right off the feet of Mahram and
Nicole Vanni to secure the hosts' 2-0 victory.
Sciacqua recorded one save en route to the shutout win for the hosts while Jones had four saves in goal for the Gators.
SF State did hold a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Sunday, September 16
th at 11:30am, when they travel to Arcata, Calif., for a CCAA match with Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks lost 2-0 this afternoon to Cal Poly Pomona in their season home opener.
