SAN FRANCISCO – Megan Johnson and Meagan Wright blasted 11 kills apiece as the San Francisco State women's volleyball team emerged with a 3-0 triumph (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) over Cal State East Bay on Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams at The Swamp.

With the sweep, the Gators raise their record to 6-2 (1-0 CCAA) on the season, while the Pioneers drop to 5-3 (0-1 CCAA) overall.

The SF State cause was also aided by Iris Tolenada, who handed out 32 assists, while Jessica Nicerio led all players with 18 digs.  In addition to her kill total, Johnson recorded 12 scoops of her own to complete her third double-double of the season. Elsewhere, Kelly Ostello finished with nine kills, while Jazmine Williams contributed seven put-aways in the victory.

Despite trailing in blocks 9.0-1.0, the Gators persevered through a ragged contest, owning a 44-24 advantage in kills and a sizeable 65-41 margin in digs.  The two teams combined for 25 service errors on the evening; however, SF State benefited from eight aces, while East Bay racked up just two.

The Gators found themselves staring at an 8-2 deficit in the opening set before uncorking a 13-5 run, capped by consecutive Wright and Williams kills, to vault in front by a 15-13 count.  The two sides then battled through four ties and four lead changes down the stretch as another non-returnable by Wright put the Purple and Gold ahead to stay at 23-22.  The Pioneers promptly committed an attack error on the ensuing serve, while Ostello blasted a kill shortly thereafter for the clinching point.

The second stanza was also tightly contested affair that featured an additional 11 ties and three lead changes, with neither team enjoying more than a three-point spread. Trailing 21-20 following an errant attack, SF State closed with a 5-1 rush, keyed by two Johnson kills and a Nicerio service ace to escape with the set.

The Gators clamped down in the final frame, limiting East Bay to just five kills, while launching 15 put-aways of their own.  Still, the Purple and Gold had to overcome an early 7-4 deficit.  However, thanks to three Ostello kills and another two by Wright, SF State fashioned and 8-2 spurt to take a 12-9 lead they would not relinquish.  The Pioneers remained in contention at 16-14 on a Nicole Boyle put-away, but the Gators answered with kills by Tolenada and Wright, while Jaclyn Clark followed with three straight aces to put the hosts in complete control.

East Bay was paced by Boyle's seven kills, while Veronica Sanchez and Samantha Bruno contributed 17 digs and six block assists, respectively.

The Gators return to the court on Saturday when they entertain Cal State Monterey Bay in another CCAA match beginning at 7 p.m. in The Swamp.
