#14 Chico State Snaps Gators' Winning Streak at Four

Angela Van Sickel Had Career Highs With Her 27 points and 6 Three's in the Gators' Loss at #14 Chico State

CHICO, Calif.— Despite Angela Van Sickel's career high 27 points, the SF State Gators lost 76-60 to the No. 14 Chico State Wildcats this evening at Acker Gymnasium on the campus of Chico State.  Chico State, who improves to 10-0 including 6-0 in the CCAA held the Gators to just 33% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers. 
 
“By far, Chico State is the best team we have played this season,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “However, we had our moments throughout the game.”  “Against good teams it is imperative that you complete small tasks such as lay-ups, put backs and free throws.”  “Tonight we were on the short end of those three categories.”
 
Hannah Womack led a balanced scoring attack by the Wildcats with 14 points while Courtney Hamilton had her first career double-double by scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Hamilton also had 7 assists, four steals and two blocked shots to go along with her double-double. 
 
Van Sickel had a career high 27 points, going 9 of 17 from the field including 6-for-9 from three-point land.  Her six threes were also a career high for the junior guard.  Also scoring in double figures for the Gators were Farrah Shokoor who had 14 points while Jennifer Le chipped in 10 points.  Shokoor also had a career high 8 steals for the Gators, who fall to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the CCAA.
 
The Wildcats scored the game's first nine points in the first three minutes.  Shokoor led a mini 6-0 Gator run as she scored back-to-back lay-up to cut the hosts' lead to 9-6. 
 
Chico State increased its lead back to 9 (15-6) as the Wildcats went on a 6-0 run capped by a Synchro Bull lay-up.  The Gators cut the deficit to 17-16 as Shokoor connected on a lay-up with 7:22 to go in the half. 
 
Once again, the Wildcats built their lead back to 9 as they outscored SF State 16-8 in the next five minutes to take a 33-24 lead. 
 
SF State finished the half scoring 8 of the halves final 10 points to cut the lead to 35-32 heading into the locker room.
 
The beginning of the second half saw the Wildcats score the first five points capped by Womack's three as Chico State took a 40-32 lead. 
 
Jennifer Le's made jumper capped a 10-2 run by the Gators as they tied the game at 42-42 with 16:17 on the clock. 
 
Chico State then took control of the game as the Wildcats outscored their visitors 14-4 in the next six minutes to take a 56-46 lead.  They increased their lead to 74-57 on a lay-up by McKenzie Dalthorp with just less than two minutes left in regulation, which at the time was their largest of the game.
 
The Wildcats then cruised on to the 76-60 victory.  In the final four minutes, Chico State connected on six of eight of its attempts from the charity stripe as the Wildcats finished 18-for-26 from the charity stripe.  The hosts also out-rebounded the Gators 53-34.
 
In the loss, SF State also forced 24 turnovers by Chico State but finished the night 10-for-21 from the line. 
 
“We will learn from this game and inventory the results while we prepare for our next two games next week at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.,” added Wallace.
 
The Gators will host Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday, January 11 and then the next evening, SF State will host Cal State L.A.  Both games are scheduled to begin at 5:30pm PST at The Swamp on the campus of SF State.
