SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks defeated the SF State Gators this evening in four sets (25-14, 23-25, 25-27, 23-25) in a CCAA match-up at The Swamp on SF State's campus. Ashley Owen and Symone Hayden led the way for the visitors with 17 and 16 kills respectively.
"Humboldt State played a very strong match this evening," said SF State head coach Jill Muhe. "Volleyball is a game of momentum; we weren't able to overcome the momentum that Humboldt State had built."
Three Gators had double figures in kills led by Meagan Wright with 11 followed by Kelly Ostello and Jazmine Williams each with 10. Wright also had five service aces and three total blocks. Jacquie Brice had a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs.
SF State (8-8, 3-5 CCAA) took an 11-10 lead in the first set. A kill by Kelly Ostello increased their lead to 17-14. The Gators scored the final nine points of the match keyed by Wright's four service aces as the hosts took the set 25-14.
The Lumberjacks came out on fire as they took an 8-1 lead capped by back-to-back kills by Ashley Owen.
The Gators came back and took a 9-8 lead as they took advantage of a Lumberjack hitting error. They increased that lead to 13-11 on a Kelly Ostello kill.
Humboldt State came right back and took a 19-17 lead on a Kelci Renshaw service ace, a lead the visitors would not relinquish.
SF State tied the match at 23-23 on a bad set by the Lumberjacks, but the visitors finished out the set with back-to-back kills by Symone Hayden to take the set 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.
After the break, the Gators came out and took a 14-9 lead. They increased that to 16-10 as Humboldt State recorded a hitting error.
The Lumberjacks called a timeout and cut the Gator lead to 17-14.
SF State came right back and took a 22-15 lead on a Wright service ace, but the Lumberjacks scored 9 of the next 10 points to take a 24-23 lead on an Ashley Owen kill.
The Gators tied the set at 24-24, but Alex Hasentab's kill gave the visitors back the lead at 25-24. Jaclyn Clark's kill tied the set at 25-25, but back to back kills by Sierbert and Owen gave the Lumberjacks the set 27-25 as they took a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.
In the fourth set, a kill by Melissa Horton gave the hosts an 11-8 lead but the Lumberjacks tied the set at 15-15 on a kill by Kaitlyn Dunaway.
The score was tied at 19-19, but the visitors took a 23-20 lead on a kill by Hayden.
SF State cut the deficit to 24-22 on a kill by Wright. Humboldt State finished off the set and match as they had two kills by Williams and Hayden to take the set 25-23 and match 3-1.
SF State will look to rebound from this evening's loss as the Gators host Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow evening at 7pm at The Swamp. The Broncos lost in three sets at #12 |Sonoma State this evening, 25-23, 25-20, 25-11.
