SEASIDE --- The visiting SF State Gators fell in three straight sets (23-25, 25-27, 23-25) to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (12-6, 6-4 CCAA) this evening in CCAA match-up at the Kelp Bed in Seaside, Calif. Jacquie Brice paced the visitors with 41 assists and 14 digs.
Julia Ashen led the way for the Otters with 17 kills and 11 digs while Jessica Malcolm added 14 kills, three service aces, 8 digs and two total blocks.
In the first set, a kill by Meagan Wright tied the score at 7-7. The Otters scored 7 of the next 11 points to take a 14-11 on a service ace by Malcolm. SF State cut the deficit to 16-14 on a Jessica Nicerio ace, but the Otters scored the three of the next four points to take a 19-15 lead.
SF State scored the next five points to take a 20-19 lead on a Wright kill.
The score once again was tied at 22-22 on a Jazmine Williams kill. The hosts then took a 24-22 lead. SF State scored the next point on a Kelly Ostello kill, but an Ashen kill finished the set off for the Otters as they took the first set 25-23.
The Gators (8-10, 3-7 CCAA) started set two scoring the first four points capped by a Melissa Horton kill. Cal State Monterey Bay tied the set at 5-5, but SF State came right back to take a 12-8 lead on a Williams kill.
SF State increased its lead to 14-10 on an Ostello ace, but the Otters tied the set at 16-16 on a kill by DJ Gresham-Ryder.
The Gators took a 21-18 lead, but the Otters tied the match at 25-25 on a kill by Ashen. They finished off the set taking advantage of two errors by SF State, 27-25. With the set win, Cal State Monterey Bay took a 2-0 lead.
After the 10-minute intermission, the score was tied 9-9 in the third set. The Gators built a 19-13 lead capped by back to back kills by Katie Judd.
Cal State Monterey Bay (12-6, 6-4 CCAA) cut the deficit to 22-20 on a Lacee Ventura ace. A kill by Ostello gave SF State a 23-20 lead, but the Otters scored the final five points of the set and match to take it 25-23 and 3-0.
SF State will continue its four-game road trip with a 7pm starting conference match at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif., tomorrow evening. The Pioneers defeated the #12 Sonoma State Seawolves in five sets this evening in Hayward.
