#13 UC San Diego Defeats Gators in Four

La JOLLA---  For the second straight evening, the SF State played a top 15 nationally ranked opponent on the road this time the Gators lost in four sets (19-25, 25-16, 13-25, 19-25) to the #13 UC San Diego Tritons at the RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, Calif.   Three Tritons recorded double figures in kills led by the duo of Danielle Dahl and Sophie Rowe each with 16 kills. 
 
Jacquie Brice recorded her second straight double-double and tenth of the season with 34 assists and 12 digs. Melissa Horton had a team high 9 kills with Jazmine Williams recording a .353 hitting percentage with 7 kills in 34 attempts.  Jessica Nicerio added 16 digs for the Gators (9-12, 4-9 CCAA) while Jaclyn Clark had 12 digs.  SF State had 13 total team blocks with Megan Wright leading the way with 7.
 
To go along with her 16 kills, Rowe added 16 digs for the Tritons (18-3, 10-3 CCAA).  Heidi Sierks had 47 of the hosts' 57 assists along with 14 digs while Brittany Lombardi had a match high 27 digs. 
 
The match started off being tied 8-8 with the Tritons scoring the next three points capped by a Sara McCutchan block to take an 11-8 lead. 
 
SF State cut the deficit to 11-10 on a Jacquie Brice kill, but the Tritons increased its lead back to three (14-11) on a McCutchan kill.
 
The Gators once again cut the deficit to just one (14-13) taking advantage of a Triton hitting error.  UC San Diego scored the next three points to increase its lead to 17-14, but back to back kills by Katie Judd and Horton cut the Gator deficit to 17-16.
 
A kill by Rowe gave the Tritons back their three-point margin (20-17), but the Gators would not go away as another Horton kill cut the lead to 20-19.
 
That's the closest the guests would get as the hosts scored the sets' final five points to take set one, 25-19.
 
Just like the first set, the second set was tied at 8-8.  The Gators scored the next five points to take a 13-8 lead capped by a Kaileen Mejia kill. 
 
UC San Diego's Caitilin Brenton cut the guests' lead to 16-14 which is the closest the Tritons would get as the Gators even the match at 1-1. 
 
SF State scored nine of the set's final 11 points to take the second set 25-16 with the last five coming with Meagan Wright serving.
 
The Gators held a brief 2-1 lead in the third set after the intermission, but the Tritons scored the next four points including two on service aces by Brenton to take a 5-2 lead.  They increased their lead to 13-8 on a kill by Kamila Tan.
 
UC San Diego continued to increase its margin as the Tritons took a 21-11 lead on a McCutchan kill.  A kill by Jaclyn Clark cut the deficit to 20-11, but the Tritons recorded five of the set's final six points to take the set 25-13 and took a 2-1 match lead.
 
In the fourth and final set, UC San Diego controlled it from the start taking a 10-4 lead.  The Tritons increased their lead to 19-10 on a kill by McCutchan.
 
SF State cut the deficit to 20-16 as the Gators recorded their points on kills by Horton and Mejia and Triton hitting errors.
 
Back to back kills by Tan and Brenton gave the Tritons a 22-16 lead, but the Gators came right cutting the deficit to 22-18 on back to back kills by Williams and Mejia. 
 
UC San Diego finished off the match scoring three of the final four points including the last point on a kill by Dahle to take the set 25-19 and match 3-1.
 
The Gators will return home to The Swamp this Friday, November 1, when they host the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 7pm.  This will be the beginning of a brief three-match home stand.  SF State will host Cal State L.A. a week from this evening also at 7pm.  The Gators will conclude the home stand with a 7pm starting match with #14 Sonoma State on Wednesday,
November 6.
