Broncos Hold Off Gators in Four-Set Win

POMONA, Calif.— Cal Poly Pomona Broncos held off a late rally by the visiting SF State Gators as the hosts won a four-set match (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) over their guests. The Gators lost despite four recording double digits in kills in Meagan Wright (17), Jazmine Williams (12), Kelly Ostello (11) and Katie Judd (11).

Judd also had 16 digs to go with her 11 kills for her first double-double of the season. Junior transfer Jacquie Brice had her 14th double-double of the season with 53 assists and 10 digs.

SF State (12-15, 7-12 CCAA) also had 10 total team blocks with Williams recording six and Melissa Horton adding 10.

The match started off evening with the first set being tied at 17-17, when the Gators took advantage of a Bronco hitting error and Jaclyn Clark had two kills to give the guests a 19-17 lead. They increased their lead to 21-18, but the Broncos finished off the set scoring seven of the final 11 points to take the set 25-22.

Katie Judd's kill gave the Gators a 16-11 lead in set two. They continued to hold a five-point lead (19-14) on a Melissa Horton kill, but the Broncos scored nine of the next 12 points to take a 23-22 lead.

The Gators called a timeout and Jazmine Williams' kill tied the match at 23-23. A kill by Jessica Doerner and an attack error by the Gators gave the Broncos the set 25-23 and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

After the break, set three was tied at 14-14 when the Gators took a 21-17 lead capped by a Meagan Wright kill.

The Broncos cut the Gator lead to 22-21 on a kill by Christen Williams, but SF State closed out the set taking it 25-21 as they cut the Bronco advantage in the match 2-1.

Cal Poly Pomona (11-16, 9-10 CCAA) came out in the fourth set taking a 17-8. The Gators cut the Bronco lead to 22-19 on a kill by Katie Judd, but the Broncos closed out the match recording three of the final four points to take the match 3-1.

Williams finished the night with 16 kills and Doerner added 14 for the Broncos.

SF State will now travel to other part of the state of California this Saturday, November 17 for a 7pm scheduled match with the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in Arcata, Calif. The Lumberjacks lost in four sets this evening to the #16 Sonoma State Seawolves at home. SF State lost in four sets to the Lumberjacks on October 11 in San Francisco.
