SAN FRANCISCO --- In both team's 2013 regular season finale, it was the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters defeating the SF State Gators in three sets (25-23, 255-22, 25-19) in a CCAA match at The Swamp. Jessica Malcolm paced the Otters with a match high 20 kills while
Meagan Wright had 14 kills and six blocks to lead the Gators.
The Otters (18-12, 12-10 CCAA) took a 6-1 lead in the match capped by a DJ Gresham-Ryder kill.
SF State cut the deficit to 7-5 on a
Meagan Wright kill. The Otters scored five of the next six points to increase their lead to 12-6.
They then took a 20-11 lead, but the Gators came right back and scored 12 of the set's next 16 points to pull within one, 24-23. Cal State Monterey Bay closed out the set on the nest serve on a kill by Malcolm.
The Gators (13-17, 8-14 CCAA) took a 9-2 lead in the next set in thanks to back-back-back kills by
Kelly Ostello and Wright.
Cal State Monterey Bay tied the set at 12-12 on another kill by Malcolm. The guests then scored the next three points to take a 15-12 lead.
They increased their lead to 22-15 on a kill by Gresham-Meyer.
SF State would not cave in as they cut the deficit to 23-20 on a
Jaclyn Clark kill. A kill by Lacee Ventura gave the Otters a 24-20 lead, but a kill by Wright followed by a service ace by Wright cut the Gators' deficit to 24-22. Julia Ashen finished off the set for the Otters recording a kill on the next serve to give them the set 25-22 and a 2-0 advantage in the match heading into the ten-minute break.
The third set was tied at 8-8, when the Otters scored six of the next nine points to take a 14-9 lead. They increased their lead to 17-11 on a kill by Ventura.
The Gators cut the deficit to 19-16 on a
Jacquie Brice service ace, but the Otters finished off the match scoring six of the match's final nine points to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Kelsey Johnston had 36 assists and 13 digs while Gresham-Ryder added four total blocks for the Otters.
Brice had a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs to go along with her three blocks. Clark finished with a match high 21 digs for the Gators, who finished their season with a 13-17 overall record and an 8-14 record in CCAA matches.
