SAN FRANCISCO --- Even though the two teams tied after the 10 bouts this afternoon, it was the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs (2-0) coming away with the win due to the third tie breaker which is total points of the 10 bouts (61-56). SF State and Cal Poly tied after the 10 bouts 16-16, but then the third tie breaker gave the Mustangs the non-conference win.
The Gators took a 4-0 lead after the first bout with
Isaiah Hurtado improving to 11-3 with a 14-3 major decision over the Mustangs' Devon Lotito at 133. Lotito, who was the Pac 12 Champion last year, fell to 0-2 on the season. Colton Shorts put the visitors on the board with an 8-1 decision over SF State's
Daniel Flores (6-3) at 141.
Cal Poly took the lead (6-4) for the first time of the match when Blake Kastil (5-1) defeated the Gators'
Conrad Snell by a 3-1 decision in overtime. Snell falls to 8-4 on the season.
SF State (1-1) came back with a 3-0 decision at 157 by
Tavis Ino over Luke McDonald (3-3) to give the hosts a slim 7-6 advantage. With the win, Ino improves to 10-6.
The Mustangs won the next two bouts to take a 13-7 lead. At 165, Shorab defeated the Gators '
Vicente Aboytes (6-5) by a 13-7 decision. Dominic Kastl (4-0) defeated SF State's Johnathan Costa (4-7) by a 12-4 major decision.
The Gators won the next three bouts at 184, 197 and 285 to take a 16-13 lead heading into the final bout at 125.
Zach Jimenez improved to 9-4 with a 5-2 decision at 184 over Kent Beechem (5-4). Then at 197,
Andrew Reggi won a 12-9 decision over the Mustangs' Nicolas Johnson (0-4) to improve to 9-4. Then in what was the most exciting match of the day, the Gators'
Hildelv Manzur improved to 7-7 with a 8-5 decision over Cal Poly's Spencer Empey (4-2) to give the Gators a 16-13 lead.
Then in the final bout of the day, the Gators
Marc Collier and Cal Poly's Brian Longmire were tied at 1-1 after the third period which sent it into overtime. Then in the first overtime, Longmire recorded six points in the sudden victory period to win 6-1. Collier falls to 1-3 while Longmire improves to 5-3.
SF State will return to the mat in two weeks on Dec. 6-7 in Las Vegas, Nev., as the Gators participate in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
