Gator Trio of Van Sickel, Batlin and Varney Carry Gators Past #11 Chico State

SAN FRANCISCO – Behind the trio of Angela Van Sickel, Katie Batlin and Lauren Varney the SF State Gators defeated the visiting 11th ranked Chico State Wildcats 82-65 to improve to 4-2 overall and open up CCAA play 1-0. Van Sickel finished with a game high 24 points and became the Gators all-time leader in three-point field goals made with 134 as she connected on 6 of her 10 attempts from beyond the arc.

"This was one of the most satisfying wins in my career at SF State," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "We were finally able to close out a very good basketball team in Chico State…our ball and man movement was outstanding this evening as we played with passion and energy for 40 minutes." "It was a special win for our seniors in particular Angela (Van Sickel) and Lauren (Varney)---very proud of our team however, we have to move beyond this game and be equally prepared for Stanislaus tomorrow evening."

Besides Van Sickel's 24 points, Katie Batlin added 21 points and Lauren Varney added 12 points. Batlin also had 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals to go along with her 21 points.

SF State (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) held the 11th ranked Chico State Wildcats to just 39% shooting from the field including just 15% from three-point range. The Gators also forced 21 turnovers with 13 coming off of steals.

Analise Riezebos had 12 points to lead the Wildcats. She was one of four players to score in double digits for the visitors.

Chico State took a 22-16 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, but the Gators took their first lead of the game as they went on a 7-0 run in the next 1:30 to take a 23-22 lead. The Gators never relinquished the lead after that as they increased it to 37-27 on two made free throws by Batlin with 5:36 left in the haalf.

Jazmine Miller's jumper cut the Gator lead to 42-35 heading into the locker room.

The Wildcats cut their deficit to 49-46 on a jumper by McKenzie Dalthorp in the first eight minutes of the second half.

SF State came right back with another 7-0 run to take a 56-46 lead on two free throws by Batlin.

Van Sickel's three capped a 9-2 run by the Gators as they built their largest lead of the game, 65-48 with nine minutes to go in the game.

SF State held on to its double digit lead the rest of the game as the Gators won 82-65.

The Gators will host Cal State Stanislaus tomorrow evening at 5:30pm in a CCAA game at The Swamp. The Warriors defeated Sonoma State 76-61 this evening in Rohnert Park behind Lauren Godde's 16 points.
