Box Score CHICO --- To open the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, SF State couldn't overcome National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. II No. 14-ranked Chico State and fell 62-49 Tuesday night. The loss drops the Gators to 12-15 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 23-4 and advance to the semi-final round in Ontario, Calif. on Friday.
"We played as well as we could against a quality team," said head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.
Angela Van Sickel and
Lauren Varney shared a team-high 11 points, with
Farrah Shokoor following with 10 points. Despite three Gators shooting in double figures, SF State shot at 35.4-percent from the field, compared to the Wildcats' 55.6-percent effort. Synchro Bull and Hannah Womack led Chico State with 13 points and Monni Davidson-Mays added 11 points.
Chico State opened with a 12-2 run in the first five minutes of the game and powered through to take a 12-point lead with just under nine minutes before the break.
Trailing 31-20, the Gators hit back-to-back three-pointers from
Shalane Jackson and Van Sickel to bring the game within five points with three minutes left in the half. Chico State continued to press, but the Gators held on to head into halftime down by six points at 37-31.
Coming out of the break, SF State challenged the Wildcats, but couldn't put a run together to remain at least five points behind the host 'Cats.
As the teams came down the stretch, Chico State kept its composure and finished its free throws to keep the Gators at bay and walk away with the 62-49 victory. The win puts the Wildcats in contention for the CCAA Championship, while SF State drops out of the running and concludes the 2012-13 season for the Gators.
"I am proud of how we battled all season," said Wallace. "I look forward to our underclassmen returning for next season as we return a solid core."
