SAN FRANCISCO--- Autumn Fox's goal in the 69th minute off a pass from Lauren Floro tied the match at 1-1 as the SF State Gators tied with the visiting Western Oregon Wolves this afternoon in a non-conference match at SF State's Cox Stadium.
"It was a hard fought match," said SF State head coach Jack Hyde. "Our team showed they want to win and they came back from the 1-0 deficit."
In the first half, there was just two shot attempts total both by the Gators. The first one coming in the 17th minute off the foot of Elizet Ceja which was blocked by the Wolves' defense. The second one came in the 30th minute, but Mari Mendizabal' shot sailed wide left.
The second 45 minutes was a total different match as there were a total of 15 shot attempts including 7 on goal.
Western Oregon (1-0-1) recorded two in the 49th minute which both were stopped by SF State's Allison Land. The first one by Savannah Bogan and the second one by Makana Pundyke.
SF State (1-0-1) had two chances to take the lead in the 56th minute stopped by Hillary Lutz. Graceanne Rettig had her attempt stopped at 56:06 and then a minute later Allison Taylor had her attempt declined by Lutz.
Three minutes later, Pundyke gave the Wolves the 1-0 lead as she connected on a ball from Taylor Higa that went into the upper left of the net.
The match remained 1-0 Wolves until the 69th minute, when Autumn Fox scored off an assist from Lauren Floro to tie the match at 1-1.
SF State had a chance to tie the match in the 80th minute, but Lutz stopped Rettig's ball from going into the net. Then two minutes later, Kelsey Wetzstein had her shot blocked by the Wolves' defense.
The Gators had more chances in regulation, but Mari Mendizabal's attempt for the game-winner blocked by Western Oregon.
The Wolves' Mariah Konyn had her chance to be hero blocked by the Gator defense in the 87th minute as the game went into overtime.
The first overtime period saw just two shot attempts and two corner kicks with neither shot attempt being on goal which sent the match into the second overtime.
In the final 10 minutes, Stephanie Vanni's chance for glory sailed wide right in the 105th minute for the Gators. Then with less than 30 seconds left, Land made one of her five saves as she stopped Rebecca Hoiland from scoring the golden goal.
"We found a couple of freshmen today that made a difference in the outcome in Brittany Oldham and Kelsey Wetzstein," added Hyde.
Each team recorded 10 shot attempts with the Gators holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Land had five saves to three for Lutz.
The Gators will open up CCAA play this Friday, September 13 at 3pm, when they host Sonoma State.
