SF State Rebounds With 5-Set Win Over Penguins

SEASIDE, Calif. –Less than 12 hours after losing an heart-breaking five-set match to Academy of Art, the SF State Gators rebounded with a five-set come-from-behind win over the Dominican (CA) Penguins (24-26, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-11). Meagan Wright paced the Gators (2-1) win a season high 22 kills and 12 digs. Jaclyn Clark recorded her second consecutive double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

"We are very happy to bounce back and win this tough match in five," said SF State Head Coach Jill Muhe. "It is exciting to see the team turn things around and come back and win."

Three Gators had over a .200 hitting percentage in Wright (.354), Katie Judd (.333) and Kelly Ostello (.286). SF State also recorded 12 service aces with Judd and Clark each with three and Wright and Kayce Skocko each recording two.

For the second consecutive match, Jacquie Brice had over 50 assists with 50 exactly this morning. SF State had 101 total digs with six Gators recording double figures led by Melissa Horton with 19 and Jessica Nicerio with 17.

Dominican (CA) scored the match's first three points, but the Gators scored 9 of the set's next 15 points to tie the first set at 9-9.

The set went back and forth with the Gators taking a 13-10 lead capped by a Clark kill. The Penguins took advantage of some SF State hitting errors to retake the lead 15-14, but the Gators came back to take a 19-16 lead.

Dominican (CA) scored the set's next four points to take a 20-19 lead on an Amanda Wasko kill.

SF State retook the lead at 21-20 as the Gators took advantage of hitting errors by the Penguins. The Gators increased their lead to 24-21 on a Brice kill, but Dominican scored the final five points to take the set 26-24.

The Penguins (1-2) took advantage of set two very early as they jumped out to a 12-4 lead. SF State cut the deficit to 19-16 on a kill by Wright, but Dominican increased its lead to 24-18 and never looked back as the Penguins took the set 25-19.

Set three was a total different story as the Gators took control early and took a 13-5 lead which was keyed by a Skocko service ace. The Gators increased their led to 17-5 as they took advantage of some hitting errors by their opponent and Skocko had another ace.

Dominican cut the deficit to 21-16 on a kill by Amanda Wasko, but the Gators scored four of the set's final 8 points to take the 25-18 and cut the Penguin lead to 2-1.

SF State continued its momentum from set three early in the fourth set as the Gators took a 5-2 lead with Jaclyn Clark serving. The Gators increased their lead to 15-10 on a Clark kill.

Megan Callen's kill cut the Penguin deficit to 18-15, but the Gators had back to back kills from Wright to increase the SF State lead to 20-15.

Jazmine Williams scored two of the Gators' final five points to give SF State the set 25-20 and even the match at 2-2.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Gators scored the first three points taking advantage of some mistakes from Dominican (CA). They increased the lead to 7-2 as the Gators had back to back kills from Kaileen Mejia and Katie Judd.

The Penguins would not go away as they cut the Gator lead to 9-8 on back to back hitting errors by SF State. They then tied the set at 10-10 on a Sari Kwan service ace.

Clark recorded a kills off an assist from Brice to stop the Penguin momentum and give the Gators an 11-10 lead. Clark then combined with Williams to block a kill attempt by Dominican to increase the Gators' lead to 12-10.

The Penguins had two more hitting errors to increase SF State's lead to 14-10. Jessica Jones' stopped the Gators' from taking the match with a kill, but Dominican recorded a service ace to give the Gators the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

SF State will now face Academy of Art at 10pm later this evening for the classic title.
