San Francisco – The SF State women's volleyball team needed just under an hour and a half to defeat Cal State East Bay in straight-sets on Friday night. In doing so the Gators avenged a non-conference loss at the hands of the Pioneers from earlier this season.
SF State (6-7/4-4 CCAA) took down the Pioneers (5-8/2-6 CCAA) 25-21, 25-23, 25-15. Defensively, the Gators were relentless, tallying 45 digs as a team and collected 10 total blocks, one fewer than their seaso- high.
"We played very disciplined volleyball tonight and that really created some quality opportunities," said head coach
Jill Muhe.
On the attack the Gators hit .252 as a team, tallying 41 kills. Junior
Jaclyn Clark led the attack with a match-high 13 kills on the evening. No other Gator was in double figures in kills but it did not matter as SF State held the Pioneers to .101 attack percentage, which included 22 attack errors.
Kaileen Mejia and Jasmine Williams led the way for the Gators at the net with six total blocks and three total blocks respectively.
Setter
Jacquie Brice finished a dig shy of yet another double-double, she recorded a match-high 35 assists with nine digs and three kills.
Jessica Nicerio posted a match-high 15 digs on the evening.
In the opening set the Gators started slow, falling behind 17-13. Following a timeout the Gators rallied, going on a 6-3 run to tie the set at 20 all. From there the SF State was able to close out the set with spectacular defense in the back row by Nicerio,
Krista Forte and
Arianna Cruz meanwhile Clark and
Bria Morgan put the ball away with several well placed kills. Morgan finished the night with seven kills, a bulk of them coming in the first two sets.
In the second set, the back and forth play between the two squads continued. The Gators took a 20-14 lead late but the Pioneers came roaring back to tie the set at 21-21. Paving the way for the Gators in the second was Mejia who led SF State with four kills on six swings but also recorded 2.5 blocks in the frame. The Pioneers hit more effectively in the second set, but still hit under .200 and finished the set with nine hitting errors.
In the third set the Gators came out on fire, as SF State jumped out to the early 6-2 lead. The Pioneers cut the lead to four at 14-10, but the Gators continued to put pressure on Cal State East Bay, pushing their lead to seven, 19-12. The Pioneers would score just three more times as the Gators rolled to a 25-15 win.
The Gators return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Monterey Bay to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:00 p.m.
