Gators Fall To Tritons In Tight Road Contest

Senior Angela Van Sickel led the Gators with 18 points on Friday evening.
Box Score La Jolla, Calif. – The SF State women's basketball team battled hard in a tightly contested road contest against UC San Diego on Friday night at Rimac Arena.  Angela Van Sickel led the Gators with 18 points, while Katie Batlin finished the night with a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, unfortunately the Tritons held the Gators to just three points over the final three minutes to win 74-69.

The Gators (14-11/10-9 CCAA) and Tritons (14-9/11-8 CCAA) were as evenly matched as one would expect for two teams entering the game tied in the CCAA standings.  Both teams shot over 40 percent from the floor on the evening, the difference in the game was the hot three point shooting by UC San Diego who connected on better than 43 percent from behind the arc going 10-for-23.

"Great Division II basketball game," said head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  "Both teams played hard, UCSD made some key shots late in the shot clock which proved to be the difference in the game.  We have to go to school and learn from this loss and tomorrow against a quality opponent in San Bernardino."

UCSD jumped out to the early 4-0 lead following a pair of made jumpers, with 13:58 Jennifer Le put the Gators out front for the first time when she connected on the first of her two three point buckets.

From there the SFSU went on an 8-0 run capped off by a layup from Batlin at 12:31 in the first.  The eight point lead was the Gators largest of the evening.  San Diego went on a 14-6 run over the next seven minutes to eventually tie the game at 26 on a made three point bucket by UCSD's Haley Anderson.

With 4:16 left in the first half a made free-throw by Kimmie Fung gave the Gators their final lead of the game at 29-28.  The Tritons closed out the first half on a 10-5 run to go into the locker room leading 38-34.

In the second half UCSD continued their steady shooting, eventually building a nine point lead with 11:31 left in the game.  The Gators cut the lead to two points following a jumper by Le with 4:03 to play, however that was the closest SF State would get.  UC San Diego held the Gators to just three points over the final 3:35 to preserve the win.

Le finished with 13 points going 4-for-7 from the floor, Leticia Galarza finished the night with seven points going 3-for-4 from the field.  Lauren Varney recorded six rebound and four points on the evening.  Brianna Harden tallied six point and six rebounds.

With the loss the Gators fall into a three way tie for fifth with Cal State East Bay and Cal State Stanislaus. The Gators return to action tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Cal State San Bernardino at Coussoulis Arena.
