San Francisco – The SF State volleyball wrapped up its non-conference slate on Tuesday and begins the march through the extremely tough CCAA schedule. The Gators begin their quest traveling down south to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Cal State L.A. on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Gators enter this weekend's competition with an overall record of 2-3 after losing three-straight matches on the road. As a team, the Gators are averaging 12.9 kills per set which ranks fourth in the CCAA. Their .225 attack percentage is also fourth in the conference. Leading the team in hitting percentage is junior middle blocker
Kaileen Mejia who boasts a .333 attack percentage which is fifth in the CCAA. Setter
Jacquie Brice continues her assault on the Gator record book, she is currently eighth all-time with 1,299 assists,
Jessica Nicerio moves into third all-time with 435 career digs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills was picked to finish tied for ninth in the CCAA according to the pre-season coaches' poll. The Toros are coming off a disappointing 2013 season in which they went 11-19 including 4-18 in the CCAA. They enter Friday's match with an overall record of 1-3, with their lone win coming in a straight-sets sweep over Fresno Pacific last Saturday. As a team, CSUDH average 11.0 kills per set and are hitting .127 as a team, their opponents are averaging 12.2 kills per set and are hitting .201. Leading the attack for the Toros is junior outside hitter Alijah Gunsaulus who has tallied 57 kills, averaging 3.8 kills per set. All-time the Gators own a 20-14 advantage in the series, and are currently riding a 12-match winning streak, which dates back to 2008.
Cal State L.A. was picked to finish fourth in the CCAA in the pre-season coaches' poll. The Golden Eagles return 11 players from last year's team that went 16-14, the program's 17
th consecutive winning season. Included in the list of returners is All-American Honorable Mention junior Iona Lofrano and All-CCAA selection Kimberly Silveyra. As a team, the Golden Eagles are averaging 11.5 kills per set and are hitting .225 as a team. Their opponents are averaging 11.7 kills per set and are hitting just .139. The Gators are 11-24 all-time against Cal State L.A. but have won four of the last six matches, including two-straight.
