Box Score Los Angeles – Coming off a dominating win to begin the weekend the SF State volleyball team looked to make it two in a row to begin conference play. Unfortunately, host Cal State L.A. had other ideas, as the Gators fell to the Golden Eagles in four sets, 3-1 (15-25, 25-15, 19-25, 19-25).
With the loss the Gators fall to 3-4/1-1 CCAA, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-1/2-0 CCAA. Leading the charge for SF State was junior
Jaclyn Clark who recorded 12 kills, fellow junior
Bria Morgan continues to make an impact, she finished the day with 11 kills.
Melissa Horton and
Jazmine Williams both chipped in seven kills each.
Jacquie Brice finished the afternoon with 29 assists and four digs.
Jessica Nicerio tallied her second 20 dig performance of the young season.
"Today's match was tough," said head coach
Jill Muhe. "Cal State L.A. had a lot of confidence coming off their victory last night and it showed."
To begin the match the Golden Eagles and Gators settled into what appeared to be a tight contest. The first set featured eight ties and four lead changes early. Ultimately, Cal State L.A.'s attack proved to be too much, as the Golden Eagles hit .393 in the first set and pulled away winning 25-15.
In the second set it was all SF State. The Gators hit .357, Clark and Morgan each registered four kills in the frame. Meanwhile, CSULA hit .067 recording just eight kills total. With the set tied at 3-3, Horton tallied a kill to put the Gators out front for good 4-3. A 10-3 run put SF State up 13-6, from there it was all SF State as they took the second set 25-15.
Coming out of the intermission the Golden Eagles raced out to early leads in the third and fourth set. Both times the Gators battled back to make the sets close, but were not able to turn the momentum. CSULA took both sets 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
The Gators return to action on Friday when they play their 2014 home opener at the newly renovated gym at the Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators will take on No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino with the match slated for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
