@SFState_WVB Begins 2014 Campaign at Route 92 Showdown

Second year head coach Jill Muhe and the Gators begin their 2014 campaign on Friday, playing two matches in the Route 92 Showdown.
San Francisco – The SF State women's volleyball team begins its 2014 campaign playing four matches over two days at the cohosted Route 92 Showdown.  The tournament is being hosted by Cal State East Bay and Notre Dame de Namur; the Gators will begin the tournament on Friday in Belmont, Calif. taking on Holy Names at 2 p.m.

Under second year head coach Jill Muhe the Gators return 10 letter winners from last year's squad, including five starters, highlighting those returners are seniors Jacquie Brice, Melissa Horton and Jazmine Williams.  Joining the team is an extremely deep and talented group of newcomers, junior transfer Bria Morgan looks to make an immediate impact for the Gators this season.

Holy Names enters this weekend's tournament looking to rebound from last season's disappointing season in which the Red Hawks went 1-29, including a 1-19 mark in the Pac West.  Likewise, fellow Pac West member Notre Dame de Namur is coming off a 2013 season in which the Argonauts finished 6-23 and was 3-17 in conference play.

Saturday's first opponent, Cal Baptist added nine new players to a team that finished 17-11 overall and 14-6 in the Pac West in 2013, their second season as a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II.  Cal State East Bay finished the 2013 season with an 11-19 record overall and a mark of 7-15 in CCAA play, placing them in a tie for ninth place in the conference. This year, the squad was picked to finish in eighth place in a preseason poll of the CCAA coaches.
