Box Score 2 Belmont – The SF State volleyball team kicked off the 2014 season in strong fashion Friday night, sweeping both matches to start the Route 92 Showdown hosted by Notre Dame de Namur and Cal State East Bay. The Gators swept their opening match against Holy Names 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-12) before defeating the Argonauts 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-12). The Gators open the season 2-0, while Holy Names falls to 0-2 and Notre Dame de Namur drops to 0-3.
Against the Hawks, the Gators attack came out on fire. SF State hit an impressive .466 on the afternoon, starting the match off red-hot hitting .579. On the defensive side of the ball the Gators were relentless, holding Holy Name to a -.035 attack percentage. Junior
Jaclyn Clark proved to be the big offensive threat, tallying a match-high 10 kills on 18 wings for a .556 hitting percentage.
Malia Muin,
Bria Morgan, and
Melissa Horton both chipped in five kills apiece.
Jacquie Brice recorded a match-high 27 assists.
In the nightcap the Gators struggled with consistency in the opening set, as they were plagued by seven attack errors and six services errors which helped keep Notre Dame de Namur in the set. Ultimately, the Gators held on winning the opening frame 25-21. From there it was all SF State, as the match featured only one tie the rest of the way.
Jazmine Williams paced the Gators on the attack, recording 14 kills on 23 swings for a .522 attack percentage. Brice finished with 35 assists. While
Jessica Nicerio and
Arianna Cruz finished with 19 and 13 digs respectively.
The Gators return to action tomorrow, playing two more matches to wrap up the Route 92 Showdown. SF State will start off playing Cal Baptists at 2:00 p.m. before playing host Cal State East Bay at 7:00 p.m. at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward.
