@SFState_WVB Sweeps Otters To Begin Road Trip

SEASIDE, Calif. – The SF State women's volleyball team got its four-game road trip on the right start Thursday evening, as the Gators swept host Cal State Monterey Bay, winning 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 at the Otter Sports Complex.

SF State (10-10/8-5 CCAA) hit .250 as a team and had three players with 10 or more kills.  Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Clark was one of those players, with her 10 kills she now has 981 for her career and inches ever closer to the 1,000 kill plateau.

Christine Johnson was on fire for the Gators, she finished the night with 10 kills on 19 swings with one attack error for a match-high .474 attack percentage.  Taylor Brownlee also threw down 10 kills on the night, extending her streak of matches with 10 or more kills, which now stands at 12-straight matches.

Setter Catherine Feathers had an outstanding evening for SF State.  Feathers posted a match-high 36 assists, while carving up the Otters to the tune of three service aces.  For good measure she also recorded a career-high with six block assists.

Defensively, the Gators held Cal State Monterey Bay (4-14/3-10 CCAA) to a .215 attack percentage on the evening.  The Otters attack steadily approved as the night wore on, but the Gators defense proved to be too much as SF State collected 46 digs, led by Jessica Nicerio's match-high 15.
In the opening set the Gators started behind early, but matched the Otters point for point midway through the frame, eventually settling on a 17-17 tie.  An ace by Nicerio eventually broke the tie for good, with the Gators going up 18-17.  SF State held on to take the set 25-17 after back-to-back kills by Johnson.

The second set belonged to the Gators from the very early stages.  The set featured just two tie scores and one lead change, that coming when Johnson broke a 3-3 tie with a kill down the middle.  From there the Gators hit a match-high .353, collecting 14 kills on 34 swings with just two errors.  The Otters responded in kind, hitting a match-high .294, but it wasn't enough as the Gators took a commanding 2-0 lead into the intermission, winning the second set 25-19.

In the third and final set the Otters looked poised to send the match to a fourth fame.  With the Gators leading 19-16 late, Cal State Monterey Bay rallied to take a 21-20 lead.  Johnson knotted the game up at 21 all and the two sides played back and forth volleyball until SF State was able to take the lead for good on Clark's ninth kill of the night, one point later Clark sealed the match off the feed from Feathers as the Gators took the set 25-23.

Also making big contributions for the Gators on the evening was Samantha Krakower who had six kills and three block assists.  Chantelle Williams had five kills, Marisa Rojo had three kills off the bench.  Krista Forte had 10 digs and Arianna Cruz chipped in six.

The Gators return to action on Saturday when they travel to Pomona, Calif., to take on Cal Poly Pomona at 7:00 p.m. at Kellogg Gym.
