@SFState_WVB Falls In Four In Tight Battle Against Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – The SF State women's volleyball team kept the match tight all evening, but could not overcome a two set to none deficit as they fell to host Cal Poly Pomona in four sets, 3-1 at Kellogg Arena Saturday night.

SF State (10-11/8-6 CCAA) entered the day tied for fourth in the CCAA with the Broncos.  The two teams were very evenly matched, as the Gators fell 26-28, 19-25, 25-23, and 22-25.  Both teams hit under .200 for the evening, with the Gators hitting .143, while holding the Broncos to a .168 attack percentage.  The difference in the match was the Broncos seven more kills, as they tallied 63 to the Gators 50.

Six players recorded kills on the evening for the Gators tonight, leading the team was Taylor Brownlee who tallied 13 on the night.  Jaclyn Clark was second on the squad with 12.  Christine Johnson had nine, followed by Samantha Krakower's seven.  Chantelle Williams and Marisa Rojo recorded five and three kills respectively.

Clark's 12 kills gives her 993 for her career, just seven shy from 1,000 career kills.  She also finished the night with a double-double as she tallied 21 digs on the evening.

Sophomore setter Catherine Feathers also tallied a double-double, as she finished the night with 44 assists and 11 digs.  Defensively, the Gators finished the night with 87 digs.  Clark led the squad with 21, she was followed by Krista Forte's 18.  Jessica Nicerio finished the night with 15 digs as the Broncos attempted to hit away from the outstanding senior libero.

In the opening set the Gators and Broncos were dead even through most of the frame.  The Gators had a 23-21 lead late and even had set point, going up 24-23 following a kill by Brownlee.  However, SF State could not put away the Broncos who rallied to take the set 28-26.

Cal Poly Pomona (13-9/9-5 CCAA) carried that momentum into the second where they won 25-19.  The six point win was the most one-sided set of the match with the Gators hitting .049, recording just eight kills with six attack errors.

Out of the break, the Gators took the lead early in the frame.  An attack error by the Broncos gave the Gators an 18-12 lead midway through the set which was their largest lead of the evening.  The Broncos tied the set at 23-23, but the Gators wrestled back the lead on a kill by Johnson, an attack error by CPP gave the Gators the set.

In the fourth and final frame, once again the two sides were pretty much even throughout the set.  The Gators took a 12-7 lead following a CPP attack error.  The Broncos immediately retook the lead following a series of attack errors by the Gators.  Brownlee tied the set at 17-all.  The match remained close till the bitter end, where the Broncos eventually took the set and the match 25-22 when Johnson's attack was sent back the other direction for a block.

The Gators return to action on Friday when they travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., to take on Sonoma State at the Wolves Den at 7:00 p.m.
