CHICO, Calif. – The SF State women's volleyball team looks to be peaking at the right time as the Gators swept host Chico State in straight-sets Tuesday evening at Art Acker Gymnasium, winning 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 in the final road match of the regular season.
SF State (13-13/11-8 CCAA) avenged their earlier five-set loss at home to the same Wildcats team that has lost six-straight. The Gators totally dominated tonight's match, as it featured just two ties, once in the second set early on and once in the third set midway through, however, the Gators never once trailed.
The Wildcats (16-12/8-10 CCAA) hit just .106 on the night and hit into 26 errors in the three set match. The Gators responded by hitting .273 hitting into just nine errors. Leading the team in kills was senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark. Clark finished the night with a match-high 16 kills, hitting an impressive .368.
Jessica Nicerio recorded a team-leading 17 digs with three service aces in the win.
In the opening set the Gators took the momentum early, jumping out to a 10-4 lead forcing the Wildcats to burn a timeout early. Out of the break Chico State cut the Gators lead to one, 13-12. From there the Gators went on a 6-2 run. SF State would hang on to take the opening set 25-19 on the third kill of the frame by Clark.
In the second set the Gators jumped out to an early lead again, going up 8-4. Chico State responded going on a 5-2 run to cut the Gators lead to one, 10-9. Out of an SF State timeout, the Gators rallied, going on a 7-2 run to go up 17-11. Another kill by Clark put the set away 25-17 to give the Gators a commanding 2-0 lead at the intermission.
In the third and final set SF State once again jumped out to an early lead, going up 10-5. The Wildcats did not go down quietly, going on an 11-4 run to tie the set up at 14 apiece. But the Gators put the match away on an 11-4 run of their own to take the set and the match 25-19.
With the win the Gators improve to 7-5 on the road.
Taylor Brownlee finished second on the team with seven kills on the night,
Chantelle Williams had six, while
Christine Johnson tallied five kills and four total blocks.
Arianna Cruz tallied 11 digs on the evening with an ace.
Krista Forte had nine digs.
The Gators return to action Friday when they will play their final home contest of the 2015 season. The Gators will host Cal State San Marcos at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Gym. Friday's match will be senior day, there will be a pre-game ceremony honoring Clark, Cruz, and Nicerio before the first serve.
