SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's volleyball went a long way in securing their birth in the first ever CCAA Tournament in La Jolla in two weeks. On Saturday evening the Gators took care of business on their home floor, sweeping Cal State Monterey Bay, winning 28-26, 25-22, 26-24.
The Gators (12-13/10-8 CCAA) were led by senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark's career-night. Clark finished with a match-high and new career-best 27 kills on 59 swings for an astounding .339 attack percentage. For good measure she also recorded 15 digs for her team-leading 13
th double-double of the season.
Setter
Catherine Feathers also recorded a double-double. She finished the night with 44 assists, 10 digs, with two aces and a kill.
Chantelle Williams finished the night second on the team in kills, she tallied nine on the evening. While
Taylor Brownlee had seven.
The opening set was battle, the Gators opened the frame on a 7-3 run, the Otters (5-18/4-14 CCAA) responded right back with a 6-0 run of their own. The two sides fought back and forth to the tune of 12 ties and two lead changes. Late in the match the Gators had four-set points and was finally able to put it away on the emphatic kill by Clark, her 11
th kill of the set.
The second set was even tighter. The two sides managed to play to the tune of 14 tie scores and seven lead changes in the set. Late in the set the Gators called a timeout trailing 20-17. Out of the break the Gators went on a 6-2 run to take the lead 23-22. Johnson's ace sealed the set, 25-22. The Otters once again outhit the Gators, .250 to SF State's .182, but it did not make a difference as the Gators went up 2-0 at the break.
The third set followed a similar script, as the previous two. The sides remained close through the frame, with two teams tying the score up 11 times with the lead changing hands five times. The Gators were the first to reach 24 following Clark's 26
th kill. The Otters tied the set up at 24 following a Gator attack error, but a CSUMB attack error and Clark's 27
th and final kill gave the Gators the set 26-24 and the match.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 10 when they travel to Chico to take on the Wildcats at Art Acker Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
