@SFState_WVB Displays Depth In Second Consecutive Sweep

OAKLAND – The SF State women's volleyball team earned its second consecutive sweep, this time on the road, as the Gators defeated host Holy Names 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) at Tobin Gymnasium.

SF State (2-4) did not have a single player in double figures in kill totals on Friday evening, but it didn't matter as the Gators deep attack had six players with five or more kills on the night.  Leading the team on the attack was Chantelle Williams and Samantha Krakower.  The young duo for the Gators both hit an astounding .412 on the evening while tallying eight kills apiece.  As a team, the Gators hit a team-high .261 on the evening.

Off the bench for SF State, Marisa Rojo had a big night, tallying a career-high with seven kills on 17 swings for a .353 average.  Linda Aerne tallied 19 assists on the night, while fellow setter added 17 of her own.  Jessica Nicerio recorded a season-high 19 digs, which was also a match-high.

After a sluggish start by the Gators in the opening set, SF State raced out to an 18-12 lead.  From there the combination of Williams and Christine Johnson propelled the Gators to a 25-22 win in the first.  The Gators outhit the Hawks .170 to .150 in the frame, their lowest hitting percentage of the night.  Johnson finished the set with three of her seven kills.

In the second set the Gators took control midway through the period, going up 17-11 following a block by Krakower and Johnson.  From there SF State held on, taking the second set 25-22.  Helping the Gators take the 2-0 advantage going into the intermission was the balanced Gator attack, through two sets, four players had at least five kills.  Also, the Gators had six aces after two sets, while outhitting the Hawks .243 to .158.

In the final set the Gators broke a 6-6 tie early and eventually built a comfortable lead, going up five, 18-13 following a kill by Krakower.  The Gators hit .444 in the set, recording 14 kills on 27 attempts and was just too much for the Hawks who managed to hit just .152.

The Gators look to extend their winning streak when they take on visiting Dominican University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Main Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
