SAN FRANCISCO– After going 2-0 last week, the SF State Gators women's soccer team is off to their second 6-2-1 start since 2011. The Gators defeated Holy Names University 5-1 last Tuesday at home in their final non-conference match of the season. Then yesterday afternoon in Seaside, SF State defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 to improve to 2-0-1 in conference action. The Gators will return home this week to host a pair of CCAA matches this Friday and Sunday.
In last week's 5-1 win over Holy Names, the Gators scored four unanswered goals in the second half to key their non-conference victory.
Danielle Vidal scored SF State's first goal and then assisted on the game-winner on a missed shot that
Kayleen Belda put in the back of the net. Also scoring for the Gators were:
Vanessa Penuna,
Autumn Fox and
Shannon Rauschnot. Besides Vidal, Penuna,
Hanna Ghamari,
Bianca Lowe and
Sabrina Corpus recorded assists.
Karin Nordin had three saves in 74 minutes while
Arianna Wesleyn had two saves in 16 minutes of action in goal.
Then in their 2-1 win on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon, Vidal scored what proved to be the game-winner on a cross from Fox in the 66
th minute.
Isabella Nazario scored the match's first goal in just the second minute. Nordin had one save in goal for the Gators.
For the season, Fox and Vidal are tied for the lead in points each with 8. Fox is tied for the team lead in goals with three with Belda and Nazario. Vidal has a team high four assists with four players each with two assists in Fox, Penuna, Ghamari and
Kelsey Wetzstein. Nordin has posted a 1.02 goals against average with 24 saves and one shutout in 9 matches. Wesley has a 0.77 goals against average with 5 saves in four matches while
Alannah John also has seen action in goal this season.
The Gators will host two conference matches this weekend at Cox Stadium. The first match for SF State will be this Friday at 12:30 against No. 14 Sonoma State. The Seawolves come into Friday's match with a 5-1-2 overall record and a 3-0-1 CCAA record. They are coming off a 2-1 double overtime win at Humboldt State last Wednesday and a 4-0 win against Chico State this past Sunday at home.
Kristal Luna and Margi Osmundson are tied for the lead with five points. Luna lead the team with her two goals while Osmundson has a team high three assists. Ashley Luis has posted a 0.46 goals against average with 28 saves and 5 shutouts in goal for the Seawolves.
Then on Sunday at 11:30am, the Gators will host Humboldt State in another conference match-up. The Lumberjacks come into this weekend with a 5-4 overall record and a 2-2 CCAA mark. They will first travel to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday before facing the Gators on Sunday.
Bridget Daley leads the team with her four goals while she is tied with Alex Jenkins each with 8 points. Jenkins, Courtney Rebata and Jacquelyn Dompier each have a team leading two assists. Caitlin Plese has posted a 1.27 goals against average with 61 saves and three shutouts in goal for the Lumberjacks.
After this weekend, the Gators will return to the road for a pair of conference matches in Southern California. SF State will face Cal State San Marcos on October 9 at 12:30pm in San Marcos and then on October 11 will travel to La Jolla for a 11:30am starting match with UC San Diego.
