@SFState_WVB Furious Rally Falls Short In Fourth Set

SAN FRANCISCO – Trailing 2-0 at the intermission the SF State women's volleyball team battled, clawed and fought their way back into the match, taking the third set and almost forcing a fifth.  Ultimately, Stanislaus State was able to hold on to the win Tuesday evening at the Main Gymnasium, 3-1 (23-25, 13-25, 25-21, 20-25).

Early errors proved to be the difference in the first two sets, as the Gators (4-8/2-3 CCAA) hit into 15 of their 26 errors.  SF State hit just .149 as the two teams were even with 52 kills apiece.  Stanislaus State (9-4/3-4 CCAA) hit .222 on the evening.

On the attack senior Jaclyn Clark was at the top of her game, she finished the night with a team-high 21 kills on 60 swings with just three errors for a .300 attack percentage.  Midway through the third set she picked up her ninth kill of the evening, which gave her 1,000 career digs, she becomes just the sixth player in SF State history to record 1,000 digs.

Fellow outside hitter Taylor Brownlee continues her streak of exceptional play.  The junior recorded 15 kills on the night, making it four-straight matches with at least 14 kills for the junior.  Jessica Nicerio recorded a season-high 27 digs on the evening, while setter Catherine Feathers finished the night with a match-high 48 assists.

Clark got the Gators off to a great start in the opening set.  She recorded four kills early to give the Gators a 9-7 lead.  Attack and service errors by SF State allowed the Warriors to tie the set up at 16 all.  Back-and-forth play continued until the Warriors pulled away late, eventually taking the set 25-23.  In the opening frame the Gators hit into seven errors, but still outhit the Warriors, .240 to .238.  SF State recorded 19 kills in the opening set compared to just 13 from Stanislaus State.

The second set followed the same script as the first set, with both sides trading barbs back and forth.  The Warriors took a two point lead midway through the second set, going up 10-8 following an attack error by the Gators and a Warrior kill.  From there, the Warriors went on a big run, going up by as much as 12, eventually taking the set 25-13.  The Gators hit -.023 in the second frame, recording just seven kills, while hitting into eight errors.

In the third set the Gators jumped out front early. Back-to-back kills by Christine Johnson and a service ace by Feathers forced the Warriors to use a timeout, trailing 8-3.  After leading 11-4, the Warriors cut into the Gators lead considerably, cutting it to two, 18-16.  The Gators were able to hold on and took the frame 25-21.  The SF State attack finished with 15 kills on 41 swings with just three errors, for a .293 attack percentage, the high of the night for the Gators.

In the fourth set the Warriors raced out ton early 8-1 lead, a pair of timeouts by the Gators got the team back in gear as they eventually tied the set and took the lead 12-11.  With the Gators leading 16-14, four-straight points by the Warriors had them back out front 18-16.  Stanislaus State would hold on to win the fourth and final set, 25-20, in the tightest set of the night.  The frame featured five tie scores and five lead changes before the final kill by the Warriors.

Jonson finished with nine kills and four total blocks.  Chantelle Williams and Danielle Rehmann also recorded two kills, and Samantha Krakower finished with three kills on the evening.  Krista Forte recorded 11 digs with a service ace on the night.

The Gators will return to action on Friday, October 2 when they host Cal State L.A. at the Main Gymnasium at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
