KEARNEY, Neb.– The SF State Gator wrestling team went 3-1 at the UNK Midwest Duals this afternoon at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, Neb. The Gators defeated Adams State (27-19, Central Oklahoma (16-15) and Southwest Minnesota State (35-9) as they improved to 4-5 on the season in duals and 1-0 in RMAC matches.
Tavis Ino went a perfect 4-0 for the Gators at 157 to improve to 12-12 on the year.
The Gators were down 9-0 to Adams State, but the Gators took the three matches starting with
Joshua Weinberg winning by a 11-6 decision at 141 over Zach Mahaney.
Dylan Furtado won by a 13-7 decision over the Grizzlies' Devin Vasquez and
Tavis Ino won by forfeit at 157 to give the Gators a 12-9 lead.
Tyson Kuahine increased the Gator lead to 15-9 with an 8-4 decision at 165 over Koery Windham at 165.
Mike Marshall won by forfeit at 174 to increase the Gator lead to 21-9. The Grizzlies cut the deficit to 21-15 with a win by fall by Richard Bencomo over the Gators'
Johnny Costa at 184. Jon Bencomo won by an 11-3 major decision at 197 to cut the Gator lead to 21-19 over
Calvin Nicholls. A win by fall at 2:17 by SF State's
Sam Alnassiri gave the Gators the 27-19 decision.
For the first time ever, the Gators defeated the Central Oklahoma Bronchos by a 15-15 decision as they won by criteria. The Bronchos won the first two matches to take a 6-0 lead, but Weinberg won by a 12-5 decision at 141 over Tyler Tustin to cut the deficit to 6-3. Central Oklahoma increased its lead to 9-3 with a 4-2 decision at 149.
Tavis Ino won by a 3-0 decision over Cody Ryan at 157, but the Bronchos' Daniel Carillo won by a 4-1 decision at 165 to increase their lead to 12-6,
Mike Marshall cut the deficit to 12-9 with a 3-1 decision at 174, but the Bronchos took a 15-9 lead with an 8-5 win by Brock Warren at 184.
SF State won the final matches of the dual as
Calvin Nicholls won by a 4-2 decision at 197 and Alnassiri won by 10-8 decision at 285 to tie the match at 15-15. The Gators won the dual in thanks to the criteria.
In their next dual, the Gators won by a 35-7 decision over Southwest Minnesota State. SF State won the first six matches including three by fall by
Fern Giron (3:29),
Dylan Furtado (3:57) and
Tyson Kuahine (6:47) and one by a 10-1 decision by
Tavis Ino. The Mustangs and the Gators split the last four matches as SF State took the dual 35-7.
In their final dual of the day, SF State and Fort Hays State tied 21-21 but the Tigers won by criteria 22-21.
The two teams split the first six matches of the dual with the Gators taking wins at 133 (Giron by 5-3 decision), 157 (Ino by fall at 2:47) and 165 (Kuahine by fall at 4:18).
SF State lost the next three bouts including at 174 as
Mike Marshall lost by a 6-4 SV-1 decision as the Tigers took a 21-15 lead. Alnassiri's win by fall (2:07) at 285, made the final 21-21 but the Tigers tookt he dual based on criteria.
SF State will return to the mat in Riverside, Calif., as the Gators will face No. 12 Cal Baptist at 5pm a week from this evening.
