SAN FRANCISCO– Despite having five players score in double figures, the SF State Gators lost 77-75 in overtime to the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers.
Jon McMurry led the way for the Gators with 17 points while Jack Pasquini and Jalen Richard each chipped in 21 points for the guests.
Besides McMurry's 17 points,
Treaven Duffy added 15 points while
Warren Jackson chipped in 13 points.
Brantley Bynum added 11 points for the Gators (9-7, 3-7 CCAA) with
Nick Calcaterra adding 10 points.
SF State's bench outscored the Pioneers' bench 32-12 and the Gators also had a 42-24 points in the paint.
The Gators took a 17-7 lead mid-way through the first half, but the Pioneers went on an 11-0 run which was capped by a Pasquini lay-up with seven minutes left in the half. A three by McMurry gave the hosts back the lead, 22-21, but the Pioneers finished the half outscoring the Gators 16-8 to take a 37-30 lead into the half.
SF State came out of the locker room and outscored the Pioneers 12-5 to cut the deficit to 44-42. The guests built back their lead to 50-42, but the Gators came right back with a 12-1 run capped by a Jackson lay-up to take a 54-51 lead with 9:40 left in the game. A three by Calcaterra gave the Gators a 61-55 lead with a little under seven minutes to go in regulation.
Cal State East Bay (7-11, 3-7 CCAA) followed that with a 7-0 run to take back the lead, 62-61, with just 4:31 on the clock. A lay-up by Bynum gave the Gators the leads back, but the Pioneers took a 68-65 lead on two free throws by Richard with a 57 ticks left. Another Bynum jumper cut the deficit to 68-67, then the Gators forced the Pioneers to miss a shot. Bynum was fouled and made 1-for-2 from the line to tie the game at 68-68.
The visitors had a chance to win the game, but Alex Carmon's shot was blocked by Duffy to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, SF State took a 73-70 lead on a three by McMurry but the Pioneers' Richard tied the game on his three with 1:50 to go in the first overtime. The hosts retook the lead on a jumper by Duffy, but once again the Pioneers tied the game at 75-75 on a jumper by Carmon. A jumper by Richard gave the visitors the 77-75 victory.
SF State will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow evening at 7:30pm as the Gators will face Cal State Monterey Bay in a CCAA game at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Otters lost 74-62 at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. SF State lost 65-64 earlier this month to Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
