SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team rallied back from big deficits in the first and second set, ultimately, they couldn't come away with the points they needed as they fell to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 13-25).
SF State (1-19/0-12 CCAA) was led by junior outside hitter
Christine Johnson who recorded her second-straight double-double with a match-high 10 kills and 11 digs. As a team, the Gators hit .077, recording 26 kills on 104 swings with 18 errors.
Cal State Monterey Bay (10-10/5-8 CCAA) earned the season sweep over the Gators after hitting .220, recording 42 kills on 109 swings with 18 errors. Sam Brennan led the Otters in kills, recording 10.
After trailing 13-6 midway through the first set, the Gators went on a 11-4 run to tie the frame at 17. The Otters rallied to take the frame 25-20, 10 Gator errors proved to be the difference.
In the third set the Gators cut down on their attack errors, to just three. However the Otters defense held SF State to just nine kills, picking up 20 digs in the frame.
Abby Griffith had a monster set, throwing down two kills and tallying a solo block and a block assist.
In the third and final set, the Gators jumped out to an early 8-6 lead, but the Gators attack once again couldn't get going, recording just seven kills on 36 swings with seven errors in the frame. The Otter's put the match away with 15 kills on 31 swings, hitting .290 in the set.
The Gators return to action next Friday when they travel to Chico, Calif., to take on the Wildcats at Art Acker Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
Double-Double
Johnson recorded her second-straight double-double tonight against the Otters. Her 10 kills and 11 digs is her third of the season, and third of her career. Johnson's 10 kills give her 182 for the year, a new career-high.
Block Party
The Gators once again received strong play at the net, SF State out blocked the Otters nine to six on Saturday night.
Abby Griffith was a monster at the net, finishing the night with five total blocks (one solo, four block assists).
Lauren Williams and
Lexi Chabiniak also had four total blocks.
