CHICO, Calif. – The second set provided the host Wildcats all the momentum they needed, as Chico State took down the San Francisco State women's volleyball team 3-0 (22-25, 12-25, 17-25) Friday evening at Art Acker Gym.
SF State (1-20/0-13 CCAA) started the night strong on the attack, hitting .189 in the first set. From there the Gators attack went cold, SF State hit .091 in the second set and .000 in the third. Hitting 12 o their 18 errors after the opening period.
In the opening set the Gators battled the Wildcats to a 15-15 draw midway through the frame.
Christine Johnson had four kills early to pace the Gators. From there, the Wildcats went on a 4-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. The Gators went on a run of their own, tying the match up 21-21 on a service ace by
Malia Muin, forcing the stunned Wildcats to burn a timeout. The Wildcats came out of the break going on a 4-1 run and took the set 25-22. The Gators hit .163 in the set, but had 13 kills to the Wildcats 12.
The second set proved to be different, the Gators battled the Wildcats tightly early in the frame. But with the score 10-8, the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run to take a commanding 20-10 advantage in the set. They eventually took the set 25-12, the Gators attack was cold, only recording six kills on 22 attempts.
In the third and final set, the Wildcats took control from the start and never looked back. Chico State went on a 10-3 to open the frame and eventually took the set, and the match, winning 17-25.
Johnson led the Gators with seven kills on 30 attempts, she also had five digs, and a solo block. Muin was two digs short of a double-double, with 10 assists and eight digs and a service ace.
The Gators return to action tomorrow night when they travel down the I-5 to take on Stanislaus State at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
